BOARD NEWS

The SLYC Board is recruiting volunteer board members, and the deadline for nominations (including self-nominations) is this Sunday, July 23. We strongly encourage interested members, including our new members and those with young families, to contact us to find out more. Contact info and full details on the nomination process can be found on slyc.ca

Thank you to everyone who joined us in the Yacht Club on Sunday for a lively discussion around SLYC's mission, vision and values. Your input and voice are invaluable as we work on a strategic plan to help shape the longer term future of our Club. Stay tuned for more updates on this front, including timing on a second discussion session.

Speaking of the Yacht Club, please remember to slow down when boating into Juniper, and to respect the no-wake-zone signs.

REGISTRATION REMINDER: SLYC GOLF TOURNAMENT

A quick reminder that registration is open for our annual SLYC Golf Tournament, which is happening on Tuesday, August 8 at Wildfire Golf Club.

JUNIOR SAILING UPDATE

We’ve finished our first two weeks of sailing and we seem to have had it all — wind, rain, storms and calm. All in all, a successful summer so far!

Our race team will be sending 11 boats (seven 420s, three Optis and one Laser) to Port Credit Yacht Club this week to participate in the annual Three Sisters and Steerers regatta. Good luck to the team and a huge thank you to all parent volunteers!

Reminder of upcoming events:

  • Friday, July 21: Dress Like an Instructor Day
  • Thursday, July 27: SLYC Junior Sailing Banquet
  • Friday, July 28: Pyjama Day

Instructors will provide more information to all sailors through the week.

Take care and happy sailing!

Dave Anderson

Director of Junior Sailing

WEEKEND RACING

We are already six races deep into our action-packed 2023 Weekend Racing calendar! As a reminder, these events are open to everyone, whether you're rigging your own boat or booking an SLYC one.

Keep an eye on this weekly newsletter and our 2023 Weekend Racing Page for the latest race recaps and schedule of race events.

See you on the water!

TENNIS UPDATE

The Club Tournament is underway! A reminder to all participants to get your matches in so we can keep the draw rolling along.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 12, when we'll have mixed adult clinics run by a visiting tennis pro. This event was a big hit (no pun intended) last year — details to follow soon.

Finally, we've put together our best tips and tricks to help you navigate CourtReserve like an ace. For the full list, click here

See you on the courts!

OPERATIONS OPPORTUNITY

We're calling on all smooth operators interested in becoming SLYC's Executive Officer of Operations for 2024. This is a paid position, and a fast-paced, challenging and highly rewarding role — one that touches every aspect of our club, from membership, to programming, to accounting, to tech support and communications.

Ideally we're looking for a hard-working self-starter with:

  • Experience in member service, fundraising, hospitality or project management
  • Prior experience working with CourtReserve or other online booking systems, Excel and social media platforms
  • Fluency in data analysis and basic accounting principles

Our goal is to identify a successful candidate this summer, so they can have an opportunity to shadow and learn the ropes from our current Executive Officer of Operations, Bethany Chittick, in August. This way, we'll all hit the ground running in 2024!

To find out more about this role, please email Cath Kirk at slycinfo@gmail.com

To apply, send your cover letter and resume to us at slycinfo@gmail.com by Tuesday, July 25.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS

  • Thursday, July 27: SLYC Junior Sailing Banquet
  • Tuesday, August 8: SLYC Golf Tournament at Wildfire
  • Saturday, August 12: Adult mixed tennis clinics with off-lake pros
  • Saturday, August 12: Dinner Dance
  • Saturday, August 19 @ 10am: SLYC AGM (and Weekend Racing Awards)
