Dear Branch Membership,

I want to wish you all a Happy New Year. I hope your 2024 is off to a good start. I want to draw your attention to a few exciting new events we have coming up this year. In March, we will have our 2nd collaboration masterclass. This time we are bringing in Jeffrey Sykes, piano accompanist at CSUEB, to work with 6 groups on how they can interact in a more collaborative fashion. Additionally, our former branch president, Jesse Micek, will be hosting a Zoom session on introductory jazz piano playing on Friday March 15th at 10am. Then in May, we will have our 3rd annual Pops Concert, this year the theme is Disney. Please take a moment to look over the flyers for each event below. Hope to see you there!

Warm Regards,
Phil Halseth

MSSL Updates

Happy New Year! Hope everybody had a wonderful winter break!

Thank you for the amazing December performance! Our January performance will be at Ivy Park Senior Living 5700 Pleasant Hill Rd, Pleasanton, CA 94588 on January 21st from 3:00 - 4:00 pm. Officers will arrive there by 2:30 pm!
As before, these are our rules regarding participation in these events:
  1. The time limit for pieces is 9 minutes. If you would like to play something longer, please contact us beforehand.
  2. The dress code for all events is always business casual—that is, no jeans or sneakers.
  3. We will make memorization optional. While we would prefer memorized pieces, we understand it is still early in the year and many of you are still working on new pieces. Therefore, we will make memorization optional, but if you need a page-turner, do let us know so we can prepare ahead of time. We want to avoid messy page turns that disrupt the performance.
  4. Please bring your own music supplies like stands and sheet music. We will not be able to provide anything except for page turners.
Spots are limited and may fill up quickly, so sign up as soon as possible. Thank you all for your participation!

Best,
MSSL Officers

MSSL Officer Spotlight

My name is Allison Lee, and I am the Publicity Manager/Historian of MSSL. I play the cello and have participated in MSSL for 2 years. During junior high, I joined my school's orchestra, eventually becoming co-principal for the cello section in eighth grade. This experience opened an opportunity for me to learn about many different styles of music while working together with my peers to put on fun performances. I am always excited to serve my community through my musical talent and share my passion for music with others so that it can instill within them the same happiness that it does for me. Outside of music, I love writing fantasy as well as action stories and drawing. In the future, I hope to become a veterinarian who cares for animals and nurses those that are injured or ill back to health.

Ariana Yi is currently a freshman at Mission San Jose High School. She has been playing the piano for almost ten years, and the french horn for six years, currently playing with the California Youth Symphony. She has danced ballet for seven years, so music is always flowing throughout her. She loves using the power of music to reach others, and hopes to empower others to do the same through her position as a Publicity Manager/Historian of MSSL-SACB. She has great interest in STEM, and hopes to be a professor in the future, inspired by the idea of pushing the boundaries of knowledge through research, as well as sharing her passion with future scholars.
