Quote

“On America’s 250th birthday, our study gives a clear reality check. The climate the country has today is fundamentally different to the one it had when the founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence.”

-Theodore Keeping, a climate scientist at Imperial College London, who worked on the study that examined extreme weather events to pinpoint the degree to which they were influenced by global warming.

SM Expands Community-Scale Green Team Action Planning

SM kicked off our new community-scale Green Team project in Rockville in June. Funded by the Chesapeake Bay Trust, and based on six previous years of funded work with 25 HOAs in Gaithersburg, SM will be working with three homeowners and community associations in Rockville to help them form Green Teams and create Sustainability Action Plans.

We started off with a site visit with the new Green Team at Ingleside at King Farm, a walkable, intergenerational retirement community of 2450 households, with LEED-certified buildings, EV charging stations, and a community garden with raised beds.

We also met with the new Green Team at Twinbrook Community Association, where we toured a dozen locations across this community of 5,500 households, including the Metro station, local elementary school, several parks, a local pool club, and Twinbrook Library.

Finally, we met with the Green Team at Cambridge Walk II HOA, a diverse community of 17 townhouses near the Twinbrook Metro, which has a community composting program; extensive native plant and pollinator-friendly landscaping; several rain gardens; and vibrant annual community events.

We look forward to developing Sustainability Action Plans for these communities in the coming months.

Welcome Aboard Smithsburg!

We'd like to welcome the Town of Smithsburg to the Sustainable Maryland program. Located within Washington County with a population of 3,000, Smithsburg has a wide range of sustainability initiatives happening. The town recently began developing its new community gathering grounds and garden, promotes a robust tree planting initiative, and celebrates its public arts and cultural programs. We look forward to working with the new Sustainable Smithsburg Commission!
