Student Life

A Long Talk's Kyle Williams (above) talked with students about slurs and how to "interrupt with curiosity" on Friday. "Students were able to understand the distinctions between jokes and slurs and the impact that slurs may have on campus," said Associate Dean of Community and Belonging Laila McCain. They spent some time practicing how to interrupt things they see on campus and reflected with advisors about where this might show up at Brooks. "All of our work with A Long Talk," she added, "seeks to meet us where we are and help us become a more inclusive and responsive community."

Weekend Activities

In addition to the musical's finale on Saturday, there are opportunities to play air hockey, futsal and volleyball. See the Weekend Bulletin.

Last weekend's fun included a dance on Friday night, hosted by Alianza Latina.

Academics

MFA Day for the Third Form

Next Thursday, the class of 2030 will visit the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston for our annual MFA Day. Students will depart early from campus (at 8 a.m. and return by 3:15 p.m.) to view works selected specifically for themes of identity and storytelling that connect with their studies in English, history and the arts.

Science Teacher Rob Bauer recently presented at Science Fiesta at the SEE Science Center in Manchester, NH, celebrating Latino contributions to science through hands-on exhibits and demonstrations. "Events like this are crucial because our children need to see people who look like them succeeding in STEM," he said. "Science sees no color, race or culture, and I want these kids to walk away seeing themselves as capable future scientists and engineers."

Brooks Hosts Learning Specialists

Led by Director of the Learning Center Karina Moltz, the Brooks Learning Center team welcomed more than 25 learning specialists from across the Northeast for the first in-person member meeting of the year of the New England Association of Learning Specialists (NEALS) on Wednesday. The day provided an opportunity for educators to connect, share ideas and explore effective ways to support students with diverse learning needs. Guests toured the Academic Commons and discussed how the newly imagined space has transformed teaching and learning at Brooks.

New England Neurodevelopment's Dr. David Stein (below middle, with Moltz and Learning Center Specialist Amo Weld) spoke with the group about understanding neuropsychological evaluations and translating recommendations into meaningful student support, which led to a collaborative discussion about the intersection of anxiety and learning. Attendees also visited the Lehman Art Gallery, where they viewed our Andy Warhol exhibition. It was a wonderful day of professional learning, collaboration and connection.
