Congratulations to Chelsie:
YVCHR Volunteer of the Month!
Chelsie began volunteering with YVCHR in March. As a new YVC Youth Volunteer, she enthusiastically participates in our virtual projects and makes great contributions to the organizations we have served remotely. Chelsie's favorite project so far has been the Foodbank Advocacy project because she was able to advocate for the hungry and collect food for local families through her very own food drive. Volunteering gives Chelsie the opportunity to make a difference while meeting new people and learning new skills, which brings her great joy.
Besides volunteering, Chelsie enjoys dancing, singing and theater. After she completes high school, she dreams of attending New York University and performing on Broadway. Eventually, she wants to open her own dance studio for kids and adults with special needs.

FUN FACTS: Chelsie loves all things Disney, as well as unicorns and her three pets (Stitch, Bonnie and Bell). She is currently
Miss Fauquier's Outstanding Teen
and will compete for the
Miss Virginia's Outstanding Teen
title next year.

Registration for our 2020
Summer of Service
program begins on Friday, May 29!
|
|
Important: Online registration begins on Friday, May 29th at
noon
. The registration link will be made available
on the homepage of our website
(prominently at the top) at that time.
This year’s camp program has been modified to allow for the implementation of additional precautions and safety measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We took a number of factors into consideration, including your input from the recent survey that was shared via our newsletter and Facebook page. Despite the fact that this year's program is a deviation from our normal
Summer of Service,
we are excited to provide these opportunities for our youth volunteers and the community partners we support.
Please note that we are moving to an
online registration
system for this year’s camp sessions, and we anticipate that there will be some associated challenges (as with any new technology). Your patience is greatly appreciated. We are not able to “hold” spots for any participants; all registrations will have to take place through the online portal, and we will create a wait list once all available spots have been filled. If you are unable to secure a spot, please email kmorgan@yvchr.org to be added to the wait list. Be sure to read the refund policy posted on our
Summer of Service website
.
**Please only sign up for one week. Due to space limitations, youth are only able to participate in one session. Thank you for understanding!**
The cost per participant for one 4-day session is $80; payment will taken online through the registration site, which will be made available on Friday, May 29 at 12:00 PM noon.
NOTE: YVCHR will require face masks, daily temperature checks at drop-off (contact free) and frequent cleaning procedures in order to keep our youth, partnering agencies and staff as safe as possible.
For planning purposes, the sessions are listed below, but locations are subject to change based on weather and other factors.
Monday - Thursday, 8:30 am-12:30 pm, various sites in Hampton Roads:
- June 22nd - June 25th (Bluebird Gap Farm)

FAMILIES OF HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS... as we celebrate the accomplishments of this year's graduates and recognize the hardships they have faced, we are eager to celebrate this special time of their lives! Without the opportunity to see our youth volunteers in person and give them a proper send-off, we would like to devote the month of June to our graduating YVCHR members by recognizing them on our social media pages.
If you would like to spotlight your graduating senior, please fill out this
form
and send a senior photo of the graduate to kmorgan@yvchr.org.

Earlier this month, YVCHR began a writer's workshop series with a group of 10 youth volunteers who are authoring their own children's books for our series
Adv
e
ntures in Volunteering
. This 4-week session walks participants through the brainstorming, writing, editing, illustrating and publishing aspects of writing. The story ideas so far have been inspiring, and we are eager to make these books available to children throughout Hampton Roads once they are complete.

Last week we learned about the illustration process from the perspective of our two guests--a published author and a professional book illustrator.
Realizing the many varied talents of our youth volunteers, we decided to open the project up to more youth by involving those who would like to help illustrate the stories. We are currently recruiting any youth volunteers with strong artistic abilities who are interested in bringing these books to life through pictures!
To apply to be an illustrator for the
Adventures in Volunteering
virtual project, please send your name and a few pictures of your artwork (sketches, graphic design projects, etc.) to programdirector@yvchr.org. Once those samples are received, we will send them to our authors so they can select the artist that most closely matches their stylistic vision.

Virtual and Hybrid Service Opportunities for June
|
|
Virtual Project
This project will inspire participants to make smart decisions with their money so they can grow into philanthropic adults!
|
|
Hybrid Project!
Youth will learn via Zoom how to grow and nurture plants from home. Those seedlings will then be installed in person at a new community garden, where we'll also build garden boxes.
