Last Day of CATS Camp

Historical Tidbit: Home Deliveries | |
Pictured: Fruit Peddlers with Draft Horses and Covered Wagon, circa 1928
Back in the early 1900's, going to the store was not a very common practice. Twice a week the grocery man would travel around town in the morning with his horse and wagon, visiting every home, and take orders for the dry goods that were needed. It would have been an item that the homeowner could not grow or raise themselves such as flour, coffee, tea, etc. That afternoon he would return to each home with their delivery.
There was also a gentleman from Middleboro who would come around with his wagon selling meat. He was the butcher and usually came once a week. He would have a large drawer on the back of the wagon where the meat was kept and would cut what you wanted from the meat he carried that day. He would also take an order if he didn't have what you wanted.

Climate Can Do:
Seasonal Food and Farmers Markets
Going to a farmers market is a wonderful activity to do with family, friends, or alone, and it also helps the planet.
Local and Seasonal Food
Farmers markets sell primarily local food. Vendors travel from their farms to the market. Because the food travels a shorter distance from the farm to the consumer, less gas is burned for transportation. Local produce is seasonal— strawberries in late spring and early summer, peaches and watermelon in the middle of summer, grapes and apples in the fall, squashes in the winter. It is fresh, nutrient rich with more taste. Additionally, smaller farmers are more likely to pay their workers a living wage than huge factory farms.
Avoid Monocrop Farming
Smaller farmers are less likely to use monocropping. Planting a single crop over and over again in the same space harms the soil, requires more pesticides, and adds harmful runoff of chemicals to local water supplies.
Accessibility
Farmers markets increase access to fresh, high quality food in lower income communities. Since farmers who sell at the markets typically travel around to different locations in the surrounding area of their farms, they can provide better, healthier food choices for communities that do not have access to them.
Reduced Plastic Waste
Farmers market products are not typically wrapped in plastic, or pre-cut and packaged, as in grocery stores. This reduces plastic waste.

Growing
"Life's challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they're supposed to help you discover who you are."
~ Bernice Johnson Reagon
"Life is about growth and exploration, not achieving a fixed state of balance. You have a very limited time on earth to experience all that you can. Figuring out how to squeeze the most out of your family, work, and spirituality is your life's purpose. Go do it."
~ Mel Robbins
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." ~ Mark Twain
