1. WHAT'S VULTURE CAPITALISM & EXTRACTIVE COLONIALISM GOT TO DO WITH DEBT?
We'll be talking about the DEBT crisis in Puerto Rico with Jubilee US Network Executive Director Eric LeCompte. Puerto Rico has been a long term victim of vulture capitalism and a tax haven for the wealthy. When major US corporations spurred a population shift from farming to industry in the 60s, the island became much more dependent on imports for food and necessities. When wages became competitive with stateside wages, the corporations pulled out, leaving high unemployment and two generations with no farming expertise. Hurricane Irma and then Maria may have ravaged the island but the banksters and vultures had already destroyed the economy. 3. HOW DO SUCCESSFUL BRANCHES PLAN FOR THE YEAR?
Elenita Muniz from the Cape Cod Branch will outline the method of annual planning their branch uses to create a focus for the year and a rationale for moving forward. This is a model that includes consensus decision making, shared leadership and long range planning to keep branches sustainable and cope with the challenges of reduced membership.
