NATIONAL CHIANTI DAY
The first Friday in September each year ushers in a celebration worthy of a toast. National Chianti Day recognizes the most-recognized red wines from the Tuscany region of Italy.
Always leading with the Sangiovese grape, the ruby red wine is famous worldwide. The iconic Gallo Nero log and a black rooster inside a red circle represent Chianti Classico. While Chianti is most associated with Tuscany, the smaller Chianti Classico region, located between Florence in the north and Siena in the south, is the historical heartland and most-respected area for red wines.
As essential to Italian cuisine as olive oil, Chianti Classico is a dry red wine that is medium to full-bodied. It shows red cherry and herbaceous notes, making it flexible with many cuisines and pairing particularly well with robust dishes like barbeque and grilled meats. And because Chianti Classico is the authentic taste of Tuscany and the ultimate expression of the region, the wines have a natural affinity to Italian dishes like pasta, carbonara, or pizza.
For a more savory and earthy expression, look for the word Riserva. Chianti Classico Riserva demands that the wine be aged an additional two years and will develop subtle balsamic and espresso notes during that time. These hedonistic wines work brilliantly with stews and braised dishes.

Disturbance in Gulf of Mexico to merge with front after two systems dissipate in Atlantic Ocean
Hurricane forecasters are monitoring an area of low pressure and a weather front over the Gulf of Mexico after two systems in the Atlantic Ocean dissipated, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
The northwestern Gulf experienced showers and thunderstorms Friday morning that were associated with the system, hurricane forecasters said. Significant development is unlikely due to upper-level winds that are expected to stunt further formation of the disturbance. However, hurricane forecasters expect heavy rainfall to continue across portions of the Gulf coast in the next day or so. The system will likely merge with another frontal system Friday or Saturday while showering the area.
The chance of the disturbance developing within two days or a week is 10%. Hurricane forecasters did not say that the system posed an immediate threat to Louisiana.
Two systems that were in the Atlantic Thursday have since dissipated, but a new trough of low pressure has developed over the waters.
Eastern tropical Atlantic system
Hurricane forecasters have spotted a new area of low pressure over the eastern tropical Atlantic that is producing minimal showers and thunderstorms.
If there is any development, it should be slow as the disturbance churns in the same area through early next week. Hurricane forecasters expect it to move west-northwestward across the central tropical Atlantic midweek.
The system has nearly a 0% chance of developing in a couple of days and a 10% chance of forming in a week.
Northwestern Atlantic system
A low pressure system with strong winds is located a few hundred miles east of the Mid-Atlantic coast.
The disturbance is producing showers and thunderstorms that are progressively taking on a "non-tropical structure," hurricane forecasters said. The likelihood of the disturbance developing subtropical qualities is low as it approaches cold waters Friday evening and overnight. During this time, the low will be moving north-northeastward at 10 to 15 mph offshore the northern United States.
Hurricane forecasters said that the system has a 20% chance of developing in the next two days and in the next week.
Caribbean Sea wave
A tropical wave is producing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms near the coast of Belize and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.
Either Friday morning or evening, hurricane forecasters expect the wave to move across Central America and southeastern Mexico. Some slow development is possible over the weekend once the system approaches the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.
The wave has nearly a 0% chance of developing in two days and a 20% chance of developing in the next week.

Five new restaurants to try in the Greater New Orleans area
by: Christian Olivier
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The Greater New Orleans area is known for many unique cultural aspects, but perhaps the most noteworthy of them is the wide variety of food available to hungry inquirers from around the world.
For those who may be more accustomed to long-standing offerings, however, trying something new may very well be in order for an upcoming weekend out.
To help out prospective foodies, we’ve put together this list of five newly opened restaurants from across the culinary spectrum, hoping to offer something appealing to even the pickiest of eaters.
1. City Market
For a wide variety of foods and flavors, City Market at 1101 Elysian Fields Ave. in New Orleans is an ideal choice.
The market features six distinct eateries offering many items, including hamburgers, baked goods, sushi, bubble tea, Cajun staples and Vietnamese cuisine.
City Market may be a good option for groups of picky eaters, as the numerous options serve to provide something for everyone.
The establishment is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
2. Rascal Blues Chicken and Waffles
Rascal Blues, located at 1801 Rousseau St. in New Orleans, offers sweet and savory Southern foods for a comforting, at-home feeling.
The restaurant, which opened on Aug. 3, is of course known for their chicken and waffles, but also offers many soul-food staples such as greens, corn bread and mac and cheese.
Rascal Blues is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and may be the perfect choice for people looking for an indulgent meal in a family-centric, musical and culturally unique setting.
3. Tacos del Cartel
Back in April, Tacos del Cartel opened a fresh location in New Orleans at 1010 Girod St., and with renovations happening at their older Metairie location as well, now is the perfect time to check out this vibrant spot for street tacos and Tex-Mex cuisine.
The restaurant offers a wide variety of tacos for customers to choose from, including eight specialty options, such as their duck carnitas taco, and eight traditional options, such as the classic tacos de asada, which is made with flank steak.
Tacos Del Cartel also offers many sides, soups, desserts and larger meals for groups. The New Orleans location is open on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., on Tuesday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
4. Sushi Takumi
This new Japanese restaurant, located only a block away from the Superdome at 703 Carondelet St. in the Central Business District of New Orleans, was started in part because the owner, Johnny Wang, noticed a lack of affordable sushi restaurants.
Sushi Takumi has also recently gained notoriety from its introduction of a “Taylor Swift Roll” ahead of the singer’s upcoming show in New Orleans.
A walk through Cajun and Creole origins and histories
The restaurant offers many, many varieties of sushi for customers to choose from, including classics like the California and Crunchy Rolls, and specialty rolls like the House Steak Roll, made with shrimp, snow crab and seared beef with avocado inside and scallions, BBQ eel sauce and spicy mayo on top.
Sushi Takumi is open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday and from 11:30 a.m. 9:30 p.m. on Sunday. The restaurant is closed on Tuesday.
5. Savvy’s Sliders
Savvy Sliders, the fastest growing slider restaurant in the U.S., has opened a new location at 2565 Metairie Rd. in Metairie, bringing to this list a faster, more everyday kind of cuisine for the those who prefer to keep things simple.
One of Savvy’s main selling points is serving fresh, never frozen sliders in a variety of different configurations in order to meet anyone’s preference.
The fast-food joint offers simple staples on their sliders, such as angus beef, but also offer more unique options, such as the “Boomin’ Chicken” slider, made with fried chicken, pickles, lettuce and Savvy’s “Boom Sauce.”
For those less interested in sliders, the restaurant also features hand-breaded chicken fingers, fries, cheese curds, onion rings and well as nine different flavors of custard shakes.
Savvy’s Sliders is open from 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday, and from 10:30 a.m. to 12 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.
This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.
- Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Optional add-ons:
- Shrimp
- Crabmeat
- Chicken
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

What a Difference a Year Makes...
Vintage variation in wine refers to the differences in the characteristics and quality of wines produced from the same vineyard or region in different years. These variations are primarily influenced by the weather and climate conditions experienced during a particular growing season, including factors such as temperature, rainfall, and sunshine. In years with ideal weather conditions, such as a balanced mix of sun and rain, grapes can ripen perfectly, leading to a vintage with well-structured, flavorful wines. Conversely, a growing season with too much rain, frost, or extreme heat can result in grapes that are under-ripe, overripe, or unevenly developed, leading to wines that may lack balance or complexity. Additionally, the timing of the harvest, influenced by weather patterns, can impact the final wine, as grapes picked too early or too late may not achieve their full potential. As a result, each vintage offers a unique snapshot of that year’s conditions, making wine an ever-changing, dynamic product where no two vintages are exactly alike.
Wine vintages are then rated by a combination of wine critics, publications, and organizations that assess the quality of wines produced in a specific year. These ratings are typically based on factors such as the weather conditions during the growing season, the quality of the grapes harvested, and the overall character and potential longevity of the wines produced.
In this tasting, we'll discuss these variations and how certain growing conditions affect wine, good or bad. We'll be tasting wines from selected, highly rated vintages in their respective regions around the world, and then ask you to rate the wine and see how your ratings correspond to the vintage rating. Join David Sobiesk for this fun, tasting and informative event! For more information and tickets, go to Vintage Variation
Our events listed below are filling up quickly so reserve your spots today! Plus, I've just added a new Bordeaux event with Nicole Todaro.

nidus
/ˈnaɪ.dəs/
Definition: A nidus is a place or condition favorable to the growth of something, often used in a biological context to refer to a site where organisms or pathogens can multiply.
Origin: From Latin, where "nidus" means "nest."
Example: The surgeon noted that the infected tissue served as a nidus for bacterial growth, complicating the patient's recovery.
The term “nidus” essentially means “nest.” In biological contexts, it refers to an environment or site conducive to the growth and reproduction of organisms, including bacteria and fungi. Much like a bird’s nest provides shelter and safety for its young, a nidus offers the necessary conditions for pathogens or cells to thrive. This concept is crucial in microbiology and medicine, as understanding the nidus of an infection can help in devising effective treatment strategies. Thus, recognizing a nidus is vital in both ecological and clinical settings, highlighting its role in the life cycles of various organisms.

NATIONAL COFFEE ICE CREAM DAY | SEPTEMBER 6
On September 6th National Coffee Ice Cream Day permits us to indulge in a caffeinated dessert. Coffee lovers will delight in the opportunity, especially if they also enjoy ice cream.
The cool and creamy result of our morning java in a refreshing dessert magnifies the celebration. While not everyone drinks coffee, some like the flavor in desserts. So this day may interest even those who don't wake up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee in the morning.
Besides, when caffeine finds its way into a frozen, creamy blend, it's nearly irresistible. Coffee ice cream has been around for many years. In 1869, coffee ice cream was used in a parfait. One recipe appeared in a 1919 cookbook for an Egg Coffee, consisting of cream, crushed ice, and coffee syrup.
Howard Johnson's serves coffee ice cream as one of their standard menu items. According to Foodtimeline.org, since at least the 1960′s coffee is listed right along with vanilla, chocolate, banana, macaroon, and coconut.
One thing is for certain, coffee ice cream, and chocolate will almost always go well together. Serve a scoop over a dark chocolate cake and the celebration will be complete.

Who is wrongfully believed to have invented the Caesar salad?
Caesar Rodney Sid Caesar
Caesar Chavez Julius Caesar
The Caesar salad is often believed to have been created by Julius Caesar himself. But it wasn’t. Caesar salad was invented in the early 1920s by Caesar Cardini, an Italian chef who owned a restaurant in Tijuana, Mexico. He moved to Tijuana from California to avoid Prohibition, and it was here, on July 4th, 1924, where Caesar is believed to have invented the Caesar Salad. According to his daughter, Rose Cardini, the restaurant was overrun with American customers. Short on ingredients in the kitchen, her father assembled what was left: lettuce stalks, olive oil, raw egg, croutons, parmesan cheese, and Worcestershire sauce.

New Orleans Uncovered
Derby Gisclair
First Movie Theatre in America
Few people realize that the very first commercial movie theatre in the United States opened in New Orleans on July 26, 1896. Located at 623 Canal Street on the corner of Canal Street and Exchange Place, the 400-seat Vitascope Hall ran movies of boxing matches, Niagara Falls, and other short subjects as well as features such as "Sissy Fitzgerald and Her Skirt Dance" every day from ten o’clock in the morning until three o’clock in the afternoon for ten-cents. It is widely recognized as the first “permanent” movie theatre.
That distinction comes from the events from a month earlier when William "Pop" Rock debuted the Vitascope at the West End resort on a 7-foot by 10-foot screen in front of the music stand on June 28, 1896, making it both the first exclusive showing (meaning there was no other entertainment on the program) of a motion picture in the United States and the first outdoor motion picture showing in the world. The projectionist was Allen Blakemore, an employee of the New Orleans City & Lake Railroad.
The photograph below is from Kenneth MacGowan’s book “Behind the Screen” and dates from 1896 and shows William “Pop” Rock at the far right in front of Vitascope Hall. Sadly, the business only remained in place for a few months before Rock and his partners took their Vitascope on the road again. The site now houses the Voodoo Mart, but does have a historic marker to acknowledge the site.

I bet they are looking up at chimneys that they are either about to clean or had just completed. I love the design on the doors of Old Absinthe House back then...they are STILL made in the same design today

Playmakers Theater been producing terrific shows from Covington’s Sans Souci Forest since 1955. LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.
Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.
Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”
Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!
6-7pm Intro to Swing
For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.
7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, August 19
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Based on the 2003 movie, School of Rock: The Musical tells the story of Dewey Finn, a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school who turns his class into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the musical features 14 new songs and songs from the original movie.

Youth principals include Andrew Letellier as Zack Mooneyham, Merah Benoit as Katie, Drago Han as Lawrence, August Doussan as Freddie, and Olivia Yi as Summer Hathaway.
Nathan (Dewey) and four youth performers will be playing their instruments live on stage: Merah Benoit (Katie) will play bass guitar, Drago Han (Lawrence) will play keyboards, August Doussan (Freddie) will play drums, and Andrew Letellier (Zack) will play guitar. Some of the youth musicians are making their acting debuts (August Doussan) while others are seasoned performers (such as Merah Benoit) who are learning their instruments for their roles in this show.

August Doussan (Freddie) has been learning from local legendary drummers like Johnny Vidacovich and Stanton Moore, from an early age. At age 8, he joined School of Rock Metairie/New Orleans and quickly rose to become a drummer for the prestigious School of Rock House Band. His musical journey has taken him across 38 states on tour with his guitarist dad. This is his JPA debut.
