6th Annual STEAM Camp Was a Success

The sixth STEAM Camp was a blast as usual! Kids were able to participate in a variety of activities with one another while dipping their toes in different arts and sciences. Whether it was through paint activities, science experiments, building challenges, sewing, musical choreography, and more, the campers were exposed to a dimensional experience that provided them with the ability to try new things and have fun while doing so! As a program serving kids ages 6 - 12, this annual event aims to make summer learning fun and engaging. Sandy Churchill and other STEAM Camp organizers hope to make “wonderful memories with [their] students each summer” in this week-long program.

Howard Seminary for Women

The Howard Collegiate Institute began its classes on October 2, 1883 for girls and young women.

"Funds to start the school were provided by Capt. Benjamin B. Howard born in West Bridgewater on March 2, 1788. It became known as The Howard Seminary for Women. It was a separate enterprise as a private high school with buildings on the same campus as The Howard High School. Drury Hall and Packard Hall were buildings for this school. Howard Seminary was known as a wooden building 100 feet away from the Howard High School." - West Bridgewater Public Library Digital History Collection

The Veterans Garden is Abloom

Over the summer, gardens have been abound and plentiful. The Veterans Garden, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping war veterans find a sense of peace, definitely has grown a variety of riches across its acres. As usual, the garden has prospered beautifully with a variety of plants and foods such as green beans, eggplants, and colorful flowers. As the summer months tick by, the Veterans Garden is a wholesome and bright reminder of the power of gardening and the solace it can provide just by being amongst the vibrant greens and soft petals of nature. The garden is opened to all veterans and their families for those interested in visiting.

Climate Can-Do: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Everything we throw away contributes to polluting the air we breathe and the water we drink! We can minimize the amount of pollution by using a simple method: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!

Reduce Is first. It's the most important! To reduce the waste we produce, we reduce the number of products we purchase. Not only will being mindful of your purchases reduce the amount of waste on our planet, but it will also save you a a lot of money.

Reuse: Another way to help our environment is reusing the items and products that we might have thrown away unconsciously. Instead of tossing that shirt you no longer wear, donate it to someone who would wear it. Instead of purchasing a case of plastic water bottles, invest in a reusable water bottle. They are environment friendly and will keep your beverage cold.

Recycle: Recycling stops our trash from wrecking the environment. You would be surprised by the number of things that can be recycled, from mattresses to batteries; metal scraps to clothing and textiles. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection provides a search bar on their website where you can type the name of a waste item and it will tell you how to recycle or dispose of it.

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences explains: "Waste, and how we choose to handle it, affects our world's environment. The environment is everything around you including the air, water, land, plants, and man-made things. The waste we create has to be carefully controlled to be sure that it does not harm your environment and your health." The best way we can help protect our environment and health is to reduce, reuse, and recycle!

West Bridgewater Songwriters Showcase

With the summer underway, concert season is in the groove. In West Bridgewater, a group of country singing girls, sponsored by WB's Cultural Council, came together to showcase their work. With a unified theme of their own relationships and breakups, the group met for the first time at the show, each from a different background.

Sarah Martin is a Nashville recording artist, singer/songwriter and performer with the goal of leaving the world better than she found it. She is described as being a “Tiny girl with a big voice and an even bigger heart” as her music has captured many country fans around the country. Bringing an air of positivity to every concert she goes to, she’s worked for various organizations like the Ladies Professional Golf Association, or the Home for Our Troops charity. She’s been nominated for Country Artist of the Year in New England in 2022.

Keiyana Marie Trinidad is an R&B/Soul/Pop singer/songwriter from Dartmouth, MA. Her debut performance was at Bridgewater's Music Alley. She has performed at various events in New England festivals, pubs, and restaurants. She was nominated in 2023 by the International Portuguese Music Awards in Rhode Island for a New Talent Award. She is currently teaching voice lessons at the Music Loft in Bridgewater.

Mariah Rose is a country singer/songwriter from Massachusetts. In her music, Mariah uses elements of pop and rock to bring an energy akin to contemporary country rock, rock and roll, and 90s country. She launched a debut single “Young Girl” in 2022, and she plans to continue her journey as she creates and brings out her narrative in her music.

An Indie Pop Singer/Songwriter and Musician, Lainey Dionne states that her music is “The sort of music that immediately makes you forget that you left a burning oven on”. She’s won over 25 awards for her debut album “Self Titled” which has garnered over a quarter million listens on spotify. She’s opened for various artists, such as The Head and The Heart, as well as Drake Bell of Drake and Josh fame, along with playing at over 100 venues in Rhode Island. She’s not afraid of speaking her mind through her songs, with the goal of making people feel through her music.

This event had a very relaxed environment, and with the comforting backdrop of the gazebo, attendees enjoyed the energy of the concert. There is more to come of this concert series, be sure to stick around!
