A Safe Haven for Newborns
IS Working and Has Been Since 2000
The direct surrender of an infant into the arms of a trained professional allows to rapidly assess and act immediately if the mother of the baby requires care. The mother can also be offered contact information should she choose to reach out later.

If a baby is found abused, neglected, or potentially trafficked or kidnapped, the trained professional can recognize these issues and contact law enforcement at the appropriate time.

Psychologists have repeatedly identified the emotional trauma a new mother can go through when electing to surrender her newborn. By directly handing the baby off to a trained professional the anxiety and emotional scarring are potentially reduced.
Why the Human Touch is so Important
The most beautiful and exciting time in a woman’s life is when she learns she is pregnant. It can also be the scariest of times. It’s a time when she needs to feel that she is not alone, that she has the support of her family and friends. Unfortunately, there are women that need to turn to strangers for the support and compassion they need; and A Safe Haven for Newborns is there for her -- no questions asked.

Facing the most important and difficult decision of their life, they seek help and guidance from professionals. Should she keep her newborn or surrender the infant and give her child the opportunity to be cared for and loved by someone else? If she surrenders her infant, she needs to know that her newborn will be safe and taken care of. “Babies are not objects. A mother wants to know that she will be safe and her baby will, too. Placing the baby in the right arms when she is saying her goodbye will give that mother, in crisis, the personal comfort she needs,” said Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Andrea Corn.

“I am a strong believer in respect to safety and the human touch; the mother needs to have someone to give the baby to,” said Dr. Peter Antevy, Founder and Chief Medical Officer at Handtevy Pediatric Emergency Standards, Inc. By placing your newborn safely in the arms of a medical professional, doctor or EMS, gives you the peace of mind that your baby will be taken care of and given medical attention, if needed.

“If a newborn is not born in a hospital setting, the child is at great risk. Newborns must be followed up shortly after birth for possible development of newborn jaundice, which requires immediate treatment with phototherapy. If left untreated, the baby may develop brain damage,” said Joyce Bloshinsky, RN MS. And that is why it is important for the newborn to go from the mother’s arms to those of a medical professional. To ensure the infant is healthy and to give the mother information should she need medical attention.
A Safe Haven for Newborns' Partnership With Hospitals and Fire/EMS…is Saving Lives
"From the very beginning I had a mission for A Safe Haven for Newborns, to collaborate with hospitals and Fire/EMS stations statewide to save newborns from the ultimate in infant abuse abandonment," said Nick Silverio. Now, all designated Safe Haven facilities -- ER hospitals and 24/7 staffed Fire/EMS stations are identified with the Safe Haven for Newborns signage posted outside of their facility. "We are not here to ask questions, we are only here to help the mother and the newborn," said Daniel Moran, Battalion Chief, EMS Division, Town of Davie Fire Rescue.

We believed from the beginning, if we saved one life all of our efforts would be worthwhile at that was 370 precious newborns ago (362 in Florida, seven in other states and one little one in the country of Honduras). They all now have a future with their forever families. All of the services A Safe Haven for Newborns provide to pregnant girls/women are also provided at no charge.
