We're both reading a lot of poems and prayers these days, and people are sending their favorites. Here's one we just received. Let us pass it along, because we need the Maximum Strength you are giving us. Thanks for being the "duct tape" we need. - Russ and Amy

Maximum Strength

for Moudi and Taylor

Starting the long drive home,

I do not turn on the radio

to hear news of the broken world.

My father taught me every broken thing,

from coolers to car doors to roofs,

could be fixed with silver duct tape,

at least for a while.

How big would the roll have to be,

America? On the seat beside me,

a green and white striped bag

is filled with humus and cheesy crackers,

chocolates filled with coconut and pistachio,

oat protein bars, dried mango strips

plus a small baggie of pretzel twists,

a road-food care package my friends

prepared for me in the middle of the night

so it would be on the counter waiting for me

to find when I left their home at dawn.

Perhaps kindness is a kind of duct tape—

which is to say it doesn’t actually fix things,

but it does help us go on. What is broken

is still broken, but I can taste the adhesion

in the coffee they ground for me last night

so I could be awake for this morning’s drive—

hints of cinnamon, dark chocolate, toffee,

love. I feel how their kindness holds me together

this morning. How sticky it is, the message

they wrote for me in sand: you are loved.

The message will fade, but as the world

goes on breaking, I feel surrounded

by their kindness all the way home.

Celebrating One Year with Caleb!

What a great year we’ve had with Caleb! We have loved getting to know Mary Beth, Ava, and Eleanor, and we are grateful for all that the Fousts mean to the life of our church. Here’s to many

more years together!

Volunteers STILL Needed:

Men's Shelter Lunch May 9

Every other month on the second Saturday, Park Road volunteers prepare and serve lunch for more than 100 men at the Men's Shelter (1210 N. Tryon St.). Our next opportunity to participate will be on May 9. The work is not difficult, and it's a fun way to get to know some other Park Road members. If you can help on the ninth, please sign up by clicking here or by contacting Dan McClintock:

First Wednesday - May 6

Join us tonight, Wednesday May 6, for our First Wednesday meal and time of fellowship around the tables. Dinner reservations are now closed however feel free to bring your dinner with you and join us at 5:30 PM. This time together offers the opportunity to slow down, share a meal, and enjoy being together as a church family.

As part of the evening, we will also host one of our upcoming Vision Q&A sessions at 6:00 PM in the Community Center. This will be an opportunity to learn more about the vision for Park Road, hear about key ministry priorities, and ask questions as we look toward the future together.

Deacon of the Week: Ann Miles

George and I have been in Charlotte for a little over 12 years, and we are thankful to have found our Park Road family. I can be found wherever there is good coffee, mountains, and cats—and maybe a granddaughter. You can also usually find me at the entry door each Sunday morning, welcoming you to the best church in Charlotte.

VSP Summer Kick Off

Senior adults, be sure to mark the date on your calendars, and it’s not too early to make your reservation by sending an email to info@parkroadbaptist.org or signing the list on Sundays in Helt Hall by May 17. The luncheon will begin at noon in Helt Hall on Thursday, May 21. The cost of the meal will remain $8. Following the delicious meal, our entertainer will be Charlotte musician Toni Naples. Toni sings and plays a mix of popular musical styles on piano, keyboard, and accordion. Steve Foley will perform with her on guitar.

May Mission Offering: Carlos Rojas, Cuba

The Cuban people are in an extremely difficult situation right now. A Russian tanker has recently delivered badly needed oil to the island, but there are extreme shortages of nearly all other goods, including food. Our partner church, Resurrection Baptist, is currently feeding about 200 people at the church each week. They invite children to come first, followed by senior adults, and then offer food to both members of the church and people in the community. Our budgeted money for Cuba is set aside for our mission trip to Carlos Rojas, so the May Mission Offering is in addition to the budgeted amount and is specifically designated to help with the feeding program. This offering provides a tangible and critical means for us to have a positive impact on meeting a dire need in Cuba. Please give generously.

Celebrating Our CDC Staff

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week to our beloved Child Care Center staff! This week, we celebrate our CDC staff with lots of love, yummy food, exciting gifts, and a monetary bonus. Our special CDC staff makes our center one of the best high-quality CDCs in the city. We are thankful for parent and church support during this week to make everyone feel valued.

We will also look to do a trip to Carowinds and a movie night! Be on the lookout for the summer calendar coming soon! - Caleb
