Last Wednesday, our Leadership in Action cohort completed Day 4 of the program, and it was one of our most energizing sessions yet. We began the morning at the Chamber office with an excellent presentation from Erika Willitzer (former Paulding Chamber Director, now Defiance County Economic Development Director), who walked the class through the service project selection process. Erika’s connection to LIA runs deep—she was part of the cohort that removed the old Certified fuel tanks, sparking what would later become Herb Monroe Community Park, and she went on to guide the next two classes as they planned and executed the park’s development. Her insight, experience, and practical advice were incredibly valuable as this year’s cohort begins evaluating potential project ideas.
Following classroom time, we traveled to the Wayne Trace STEAM Center, where Angie Stokes offered an excellent tour of their labs and workforce-aligned programs. The hands-on learning environment at WT showcases just how much talent is being cultivated in Paulding County. From there, we headed to Vantage Career Center for lunch, a welcome from Superintendent Rick Turner, and guided program tours by Ben Winans and Tessa Laing, highlighting career pathways, industry partnerships, and leadership development. Both visits gave our cohort a deeper understanding of local workforce ecosystems and the skills students are gaining right here in our region.
In addition to LIA, we are putting the finishing touches on the 2026 Membership Guide. This updated guide includes streamlined benefits, refreshed sponsorship opportunities, and new avenues for members to connect and grow. I’m excited to roll it out soon and share what’s ahead for the coming year.
As we close out December, I also want to extend sincere appreciation to two board members whose time on the Chamber Board has come to an end. Lora Lyons (United Way of Paulding / Mayor of Payne) has termed out after years of dedicated service, and Abby Hornish (Union Bank) has stepped away due to time constraints. We are grateful for their leadership, commitment, and positive impact on the Chamber.
Our board is now working to fill these seats, and we will elect officers and assign committees at our January Board Meeting. I look forward to welcoming new leadership and continuing to strengthen the support we provide to our local business community.

Slusher's Jewelry
| | |
We are delighted to welcome Tim and Jennifer Slusher, owners of Slusher’s Jewelry, as the newest members of the Paulding Area Chamber of Commerce.
Slusher’s Jewelry has been serving the Van Wert region since 1995, becoming a trusted local destination for fine jewelry, engagement rings, custom designs, expert repairs, and attentive customer service. As Tim shared, “We believe jewelry should tell a story—whether it’s celebrating life’s milestones, honoring meaningful moments, or creating something truly one-of-a-kind.”
For nearly three decades, their family-owned store has built strong relationships grounded in integrity, craftsmanship, and connection to community. “Building lasting relationships with our customers and supporting our local communities has always been at the heart of what we do,” Tim added.
The Slusher family carries deep ties to Paulding County. Jennifer’s great-great-grandfather was Lewis Smith, and her great-grandfather, Carl Smith, owned L. Smith and Son in Antwerp. On her mother’s side, Jennifer’s grandparents, Roy and June Rager of Payne, were lifelong farmers and members of the Latty Apostolic Christian Church. Her parents, Dr. Carl Jeffery and Susan Rager-Jeffery, continue the family connection to northwest Ohio.
Jennifer is also a music teacher at Van Wert Elementary School. Tim and Jennifer have two sons, Grant and Avery (married to Madison Case-Slusher).
Tim shared their excitement about becoming part of the Chamber community:
“We are excited and honored to join the Paulding County Chamber of Commerce and look forward to becoming more involved in the Paulding County community. We are eager to connect with fellow Chamber members, support local businesses, and build new relationships throughout the county.”

PartnerShip and FedEx

Holiday Shipping Costs Are Rising — NOACC Can Help
Holiday shipping surcharges are increasing across major carriers this year. FedEx and UPS began applying tiered demand surcharges at the end of September 2025, with the highest fees hitting in November and December before ending in mid-January. These peak charges will have the biggest impact on oversized, special-handling, and high-volume residential shipments.
To help offset these costs, Chamber members have access to exclusive discounts through the NOACC FedEx Advantage Program. Members can receive 45% off expedited shipments and 25% off standard shipments—a valuable way to reduce expenses during the busiest shipping season.
This benefit is completely free with no minimums. Existing FedEx users can enroll and continue shipping as usual; discounts are added automatically to your account. If you don’t have a FedEx account yet, you can open one easily during enrollment.
Start saving on your holiday shipping and enroll today in the FedEx Advantage Program.

PPEC Now Accepting Applications
for Zero-Interest REDLG Loans
| | |
Paulding Putnam Electric Cooperative is celebrating major progress on its first USDA Rural Economic Development Loan & Grant (REDLG) project — and is now accepting applications for its next round of zero-interest loans to support local community and economic development.
In 2022, PPEC secured a $360,000 zero-interest REDLG loan for the Village of Ottoville to expand infrastructure at its industrial park. The investment funded water and sewer extensions and a new access road, resulting in 30 acres of fully developed, shovel-ready property for future business growth.
Ottoville Mayor Ron Miller shared that the loan “saved us a big chunk of money,” and that the park is now positioned to attract new employers. Existing tenants — including Progressive Stamping, Inc. and Miller Precision — already provide more than 350 local jobs in fabrication, prototyping, stamping, and robotic welding.
Village leaders say developments like this strengthen budgets, create job opportunities, and help small communities stay vibrant as young families return to the area in search of strong schools and quality amenities.
PPEC Chief Financial Officer Renee Hull said supporting REDLG projects fits directly into the co-op’s mission: “We’re more than just your local electric and fiber cooperative — we’re a partner in community growth. Programs like REDLG help local leaders turn big ideas into real results.”
Who can apply?
Cities, villages, businesses, nonprofits, and other organizations — membership in the co-op is NOT required.

What Would Another AEP Increase Mean For You?
Adding to the pain from a recent 36% jump in the Standard Service Offer Price. If approved, a typical AEP residential consumer’s annual bill could go up by nearly $50.
| | |
The Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel (OCC), the state’s designated advocate for residential utility consumers, has formally intervened to protect the interests of AEP Ohio’s residential customers. We are bringing a team of experts together to carefully review AEP Ohio’s proposal. OCC’s objective is to ensure residential consumers pay only necessary and prudent costs for safe and reliable electricity service.
You can help. Your voice as a consumer is crucial. Making your opinion known can make a difference in the PUCO’s final decision.
