Our area is experiencing a notable increase in residential burglaries. The Scottsdale Police Department (SPD) has informed us of incidents primarily targeting homes adjacent to golf courses or desert wash areas. This trend emphasizes the need for heightened vigilance and security measures within our community.
The SPD believes these incidents are related to a South American Theft Group that targets homes most often during dinnertime and early evening hours, between 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. In most cases, groups of two to four members are dropped off in a publicly accessible neighborhood to enter and travel by foot to residences.
Suspects may carry fictitious ID cards and passports. They are known to utilize cellular and Wi-Fi jamming devices to disable video surveillance equipment, alarm systems, and cell signals. Some use window punch tools, screwdrivers, and grinders to break glass and door locks.
In some instances, residents have received calls from the call box requesting codes and lot numbers. So far, where a homeowner has been home and/or interrupted the burglary, the group has fled without confrontation.
We advise Sincuidados residents to enhance their home security measures.
Key Recommendations:
- Securing Entry Points: Ensure all doors are locked and utilize alarms if available. Recent reports indicate attempts to access homes via misleading calls at entry points. Be vigilant and verify any unusual requests for access codes or lot numbers.
- Motion Sensor Lighting: Installation around doors, gates, and walkways can deter unauthorized entry by illuminating these areas upon detecting movement.
- Interactive Cameras: Devices like Ring or Nest offer the ability to monitor your home remotely. Their interactive features allow for real-time communication with anyone at your door, providing an added layer of security.
- Valuables and Garage Doors: Keep valuables secured and garage doors closed when not in use. An open garage can serve as an inviting access point for potential burglars.
- Lighting When Away: Utilize timers or smart home systems to keep lights on in various parts of your home when you are away, creating the appearance of occupancy.
- Suspicious Activity: If you see something, say something to the Scottsdale Police Department at their non-emergency number (480) 312-5000, or dial 911 for crimes in progress.
Although there have been some arrests, approximately 111 burglaries have been reported in the Valley since December, with roughly $3 million of cash and valuables stolen.
By staying informed and taking proactive steps, we can maintain the safety of our community. The Homeowners Association is here to assist with any concerns or questions regarding home safety improvements. Please feel free to reach out for support or guidance in implementing these security measures.
