Planning Underway for the 3rd Maternal and Newborn Care Conference

Planning is underway for the 3rd Maternal and Newborn Care Conference in Tonkolili District in January 2026.

Building on the success of previous gatherings in Bo (2024) and Kenema (2025), these conferences bring together Sierra Leonean and international health professionals to strengthen maternal and child health systems through training, research, and collaboration.

The purpose is simple yet powerful: to improve outcomes for mothers and children by sharing skills, building local capacity, and creating sustainable change.

We are always looking for dedicated professionals to join us. This January, Together for Global Health members—Healey International Relief Foundation, Helping Children Worldwide, and Tenki for Born—invite medical and public health professionals, faculty, and students to partner with us in Sierra Leone.

Opportunities include training nurses and midwives, joining the conference support team to help with data collection and grading exams, and supporting ultrasound training.

Positions are available from January 5-30, 2026. The Conference itself will take place January 15-24. Participants are responsible for their own expenses, but in-country travel will be provided.

Partnership Supports Infection Prevention Control Efforts

Healey International Relief Foundation (HIRF), in partnership with the Foundation for the Localization and Innovation of Global Health Technologies (F.L.I.G.H.T.) and with support from long-term partner MAP International, has boosted Sierra Leone’s hospitals with a major donation of personal protective equipment and amoxicillin. Arriving at a pivotal moment as the country nears elimination of Mpox, the shipment is helping health facilities safeguard recent progress while building resilience against future health challenges.

The contribution included more than 450,000 pairs of gloves, 350,000 masks, 760 isolation gowns, and a supply of amoxicillin. These resources are vital for protecting frontline health workers and for providing essential treatment—not only for Mpox-related complications, but for a wide range of bacterial infections that patients face every day.

“On the ground in Sierra Leone, we see how difficult it can be for facilities to keep gowns, masks, and gloves in stock. These are simple items, but they make all the difference in keeping health workers safe,” said Josephine Garnem, Executive Director of HIRF.
