Building a world where everyone is Known, Valued, and Included

October 2026

Welcome! In this issue, we’re sharing stories, upcoming events, and updates that highlight the people, partnerships, and progress happening at The Independence Center and throughout our community. It’s all part of our work to create a community where people with disabilities are Known, Valued, and Included.

Vote at The IC!

[Image description: In one of The IC's conference rooms, voting booths have been set up. A voting official prepares a voting machine in one, leaning over the short desk.]

Uncertainty about accessibility and the availability of accommodations at polling places can discourage people from exercising their right to vote. In an effort to ensure everyone's access to the electoral process, The IC will again open our facility as a Voter Service and Polling Center (VSPC) for this year’s November elections.

Our building is fully accessible, meaning anyone can come in and utilize the space, regardless of disability. An accessible voting machine will be available, with certified election officials on-hand to answer questions. By voting at The IC, you can cast your vote independently and with privacy. If you’ve already filled out a ballot, there will also be a ballot drop box where your ballot can be officially and securely deposited.

In the last general election, hundreds of people cast their votes at The IC! As the home of disability civil rights in the Pikes Peak Region, The IC is proud to do our part to make sure that our community is able to exercise their voting rights.

Our offices will be open as a VSPC from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 30, Saturday, October 31, and Monday, November 2.

On Election Day,
Tuesday, November 3, we will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

If you want to know more about accessible voting at The IC, please call us at 719-471-8181 or email us at this link: info@the-ic.org

Next to these, the words "Pathways to Progress" and "Free Virtual Workshop Series." October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and this year Workforce Colorado Pikes Peak and the Colorado Division of Vocational Rehab are offering a series of free virtual workshops and webinars! Throughout the month, anyone can enjoy these presentations and workshops about disability, accessibility, and inclusive employment.

One of these workshops was hosted by The IC's Community Outreach Specialist Daniel Kehn! On October 15, Daniel gave a presentation on Centers for Independent Living (CILs) and the services they offer. It was an amazing opportunity to help explain the important role CILs play in empowering and advocating for people with disabilities.

All of the webinars are free and online, but each one requires registration, so make sure to reserve your space!

Help The IC Support Veteran-owned Small Businesses at Mission Colorado on November 4

[Image description: A graphic with some ragged red, white, and blue stripes with white stars above. In the middle, text says "Visit our exhibitor table!" and "Mission Colorado" above the date 11 4 26. Various logos are at the bottom above the website.]

Sponsored by the Colorado Small Business Development Center Network (SBDC), Mission Colorado is an event for Veterans, military spouses, business owners, and the community on Wednesday, November 4. The event connects all of these groups and supports Veterans in our community, so The IC is thrilled to have a table at this event!

At The IC, we are proud to support Veterans year-round through our Veteran Directed Care program. This program empowers Veterans to live independently by giving them the freedom to choose their own care and remain in their homes. We're excited to partner with other organizations and companies in the Pikes Peak Region to provide opportunities and access for Veterans, and Mission Colorado will be a great example of this. Make sure you stop by to say hello during the event!

To register and learn more, go to their website at this link:

If you or a loved one is a Veteran and would like to speak with someone from our VDC program, call us at 719-471-8181 or send an email to info@the-ic.org.
