Therefore it was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth. (Genesis 11:9)
As Jesus said in Luke 17, the kindom of God “is not coming with things that can be observed,” such as the construction of great cities, temples, or legacies in our own name. Unlike the people of Shinar who were united by language and imperial ambition, the kin of the Kin-dom of God are united by the love and purposes of Emmanuel, the God who is with us. A desire for economic and political power can unify people across many spectrums of identity, but Genesis 11 warns that the pursuit of unity through imperial ambition may lead to judgment and destruction.
What contrast the story at Shinar holds when compared to the story at Pentecost! The Spirit comes down not in judgment but empowerment. Foreign tongues bring coherence not confusion. The disciples speak with one voice and one heart as people of every nation catch their first glimpse of Jesus’ kindom community breaking forth in the bold witness of the disciples! God calls us to be kindom builders animated by Spirit and unified in voice and vision. Pentecost invites us into the building of kindom, together!

Interim Minister Search Committee Continues Work
The Interim Minister Search Committee continues its work to call an Interim Lead Minister for Broadway. As a reminder, the committee’s members are Phil Fichter, Martha Jolly, Lysa Holmes, Ken Butler and Brent Ghan (Chair). The committee has spent considerable time reviewing profiles of potential candidates for the Interim Lead Minister position and has been encouraged by the quality of the candidates interested in serving Broadway. The interview process is now underway.
The next step will include the committee’s recommendation for the Interim Lead Minister candidate being presented to the Board. If the Board approves the committee’s selection, the prospective Interim Lead Minister will be presented to the congregation. A two-thirds vote of the congregation will be required before a call may be extended. The committee’s pledge is to keep the congregation informed about the progress of the search while at the same time maintaining strict confidentially about all possible candidates for the position.
The Interim Minister Search Committee is grateful for your prayers and support during this process. We put our trust in the Holy Spirit to guide us as we seek to call the right person for this vitally important role.
Brent Ghan, Chair

Special Offering This Sunday
Your gifts to the 2023 Pentecost Offering help ensure our movement continues to embody the Disciples of Christ vision: to be and to share the Good News, witnessing, loving and serving from our doorsteps to the ends of the earth.
Half of your gift supports the local new church movement through your region’s ministry. The other half supports New Church Ministry efforts across the United States and Canada to equip, train, and empower new leaders.
So, thank you. For participating in the new thing God is still doing — just as in the beginning.

Children's & Youth Update
|
Broadway is seeking a consistent Nursery Attendant for Sunday mornings from 8:45 to 11:45 am. If you or someone you know would be interested please contact Kate.
Children’s Ministry is still in need of VBS volunteers. Specifically two door keepers to check kids in beginning at 8am and stay till check out at 12. There will be down time in between so it would be perfect for a knitting project or reading.
We also need a preschool classroom helper, an usher for the 3rd grade class, and a station leader for missions rotation. To volunteer for VBS, email Kate.

Thoughts and Prayers
For Mickey and Ralph Havener is the passing of their daughter Valerie.
Thank You
From the family of Gertie Combs, we thank you for an incredible celebration of Mom's life. From Ingrid, coordinating the logistics and Taby, an amazing technician to Patsy Dalton being our host. Zach Schulte providing beautiful music, Mary Cunningham, a heartfelt prayer, and the hard-working bereavement team, full of Mom's friends, who fed and cared for our family and friends. And special thank you to Terry Overfelt, who spent countless hours (so thank you Jeff Overfelt!) talking to our family all over the world, listening and loving, and weaved the amazing story of mom's life and faith. The cards, the expressions of sympathy, sharing how Gertie, and Bob, touched your life, the texts, and all acts of kindness, have eased the ache of loss. Thank you all.
-Melanie, Michaela and Jeff
