VIDEO: Sheriff updates plans to resume in-person jail visits, reflects on Chauvin trial
Just over a year ago, the Sheriff's Office reported the first COVID positive justice-involved person in our jail. One hundred and forty-two cases later, we have testing and vaccinations and processes in place to keep everyone safe and help move us toward resuming "normal" operations.

As we support one another in recovery from COVID, take time to celebrate the vibrant and diverse communities which define our City.

April is Arab American Heritage Month. This past week marked the start of Ramadan, a month during which Muslims worldwide practice the holiest foundations of their faith.

We also wish to recognize our 9-1-1 dispatchers during National Emergency Dispatcher Week. 9-1-1 dispatchers are typically the "first responders' first responders," taking calls and sharing lifesaving information.

Like the rest of our nation, we are paying close attention to the trial of Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd. What we saw on the video of that tragic event was counter to everything that Bay Area public safety agencies teach, preach and put into practice. Respect and protection for life is our responsibility not just as a deputy or peace officer, but as a human being.

Please take a moment to watch the video above where I talk more about these issues. Please stay safe and healthy, be well and take care.
National Autism Awareness Month increases global understanding
April is National Autism Acceptance Month. Several of our staff are raising children and helping adult children with autism spectrum disorder.

As public safety officers, the Sheriff's Office encounters people with autism in emergency situations. It's vital that we understand and be trained to recognize the signs of autism. The Autism Speaks organization provides resources to help. Click here for more information.

SFSO Women's Summit panelists share stories of courage and triumph
The first Women's History Month Virtual Summit hosted by the San Francisco Sheriff's Office took place on Thursday, March 25, 2021, and was a resounding success!

We were moved by the five panelists' personal stories of courage, persistence and triumph. They filled us with admiration and give us optimism for the future of public safety. Thank you to Anna Duckworth, Bay Area Rapid Transit Communications Officer, for her skillful event moderation. The full one-hour summit is available below.
