Message from the Director
Greetings!
I hope that you were able to recharge this summer. We hosted our Onboarding and Mini College in June, when we officially welcomed our new cohort of 13 Champion Provider Fellows and celebrated the accomplishments of our graduating cohort! We are excited to support our new Fellows as they put Policy, System, and Environmental (PSE) change into action in their communities! Our new Fellows will gain some hands on experience crafting and delivering effective messaging during our upcoming Media Training in September, led by BMC. We also look forward to brainstorming more about their PSE work and interest during next week’s Work In Progress (WIP) call. As a reminder, Alumni Fellows are welcome to join WIP calls to share experiences and network with other like-minded Champions in PSE change.
Recognizing the power of learning from alumni, we are pleased to announce our 2023-2025 alumni mentors.

Our alumni mentors will be serving as moderators for webinars and trainings, and providing technical assistance to our new cohort of Fellows.
The Childhood Obesity Communications Toolkit is available for download on our website. As a reminder the Communications Toolkit was developed to foster community dialogue and develop potential solutions around rising rates of childhood obesity and related health issues accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, these detrimental health impacts persist and we encourage you to leverage this resource to spark conversations that will inspire positive change.

Evaluation of the sugar-sweetened beverage tax in Oakland, United States, 2015-2019: A quasi-experimental cost-effectiveness study
PLOS Med. White JS, Basu S, Kaplan S, Madsen KA, Villas-Boas SB, Schillinger D (2023). https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pmed.1004212
A sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) tax levied in Oakland was associated with a substantial decline in volume of SSBs purchased, an association that was sustained more than 2 years after tax implementation. The study team included senior author Dr. Dean Schillinger, UCSF professor of medicine, and UC Berkeley researchers. According to the study, purchases of SSBs dropped 26.8%—compared to similar cities not subject to a tax—between July 2017, when the one-cent-per-ounce tax went into effect, and Dec. 31, 2019. The findings suggest that SSB taxes are effective policy instruments for improving health and generating significant cost savings for society.
