The Pentecost Spirit

by the Reverend Meredith Ward, Senior Associate Rector

This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost when we recall the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the first disciples. Pentecost is often referred to as the birthday of the Church because it is the moment when a group of frightened and tentative followers were transformed into a confident and unified community ready to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. As the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit is often overlooked and, frankly, can be hard to wrap our minds around. The Bible describes the Spirit as breath, wind, fire, and a dove, but in trying to get a handle on the Spirit we can end up diminishing, taming, or claiming her as our own. The Spirit blows where she chooses so let’s not try to pin her down. Let’s look instead for the Spirit to be revealed in hearts set aflame and a Church brought to life through the power of the living God.

The Pentecost Story

Sunday, May 24 at our 9 am and 11 am services

Do you read or speak a language other than English? Can you do that in our Pentecost services? On Sunday, May 24 at our 9 am and 11 am services, we ask all who can to stand at their seat and read Acts 2:5–11 in a different language at the same time the lesson is read in English. Hearing all the languages at one time gives a powerful sense of that first Pentecost. Bring your own translation, print our translation packet from stbarts.org/pentecost, or pick up a copy from an usher at the Park Avenue doors as you enter the church. All languages, all readers welcome!

Legacy Giving at St. Bart’s

Legacy gifts have long played a meaningful role in our parish’s life, helping to ensure its vitality for future generations, and the Mosaic Society was founded to honor those who have included St. Bart’s in their estate plans. As we prepare for the Mosaic Society’s annual celebration, we encourage parishioners who may not have already to consider a planned gift to St. Bart's. For more information, visit stbarts.org/legacygiving or reach out to Susannah Wade Lewis at swadelewis@stbarts.org or 212-378-0278.
