Library Update: Continuing a Legacy With a Community in Motion
The City of Cedar Park partnered with Lake Flato to design our new Library.
Lake Flato creatively repurposed trees from the site to craft a stunning wood wall, combining beauty with acoustic functionality. These American Elms, Cedar Elms, and Pecan Trees, aged 30 to 80 years, were skillfully cut at a local sawmill, and each piece is tagged to create a tangible legacy. This wall symbolizes the harmony between nature and design, celebrating the connection between trees and books.
Minimizing the impact on trees and local foliage was a concern deeply intertwined with the design and construction of the new Library. The building's “u-shape” and site location were designed around the trees in the Bell District with the goal of preserving as many as possible. Additionally, trees have been added to the space to account for those removed. Overall, twice as many trees have been planted than were removed.
The repurposed tree wall acknowledges the past while speaking to the City's commitment to ensure the Library's purpose as a local gathering space, center for lifelong learning, and indispensable resource to a growing community.
