June is the month that kicks off summer fun for many families and friends to celebrate the outdoors and time together. I encourage each of us who are parents, caregivers or work with children that we take actions to avoid summer learning loss.

What is summer learning loss? Research has shown that, on average, academic achievement scores decline over the summer without stimulation to keep the brain active. You can help prevent this academic slide by being intentional with interactions with children. Children learn through play and communication with others and their environment. There are formal and informal settings to achieve this goal.

Beginning in July 2023, all Colorado children during the year before they enter kindergarten may access 10 hours per week of voluntary preschool for free. This universal preschool resource is an incredible opportunity for children, families and child care providers that must be capitalized upon for the good of our children and community. Universal preschool will not only expand access for 4-year-old children but can serve as a catalyst to transform Colorado’s entire early childhood system.

If you are a parent of a young child, a child care provider, or a leader working on behalf of young children, Weld County’s Early Childhood 1732192 Council would like to hear from you.
