A study from Frontiers in Nutrition found that a large portion of those with hypertension have vitamin D deficiency and elevated homocysteine which adversely affects executive function. Correcting vitamin D deficiency with supplementation and high homocysteine through individualized B-vitamins can reverse this.

Steve: Accumulating evidence over the past two decades demonstrates that a biomarker called C-reactive protein, which signals the presence of inflammation, is a better predictor of risk for heart disease than cholesterol.
Another study from The Lancet found that C-reactive protein can predict heart disease just as well as blood pressure can. It is estimated that 52% of Americans have elevated level of C-reactive protein in their blood.
As a result, in September 2025, the American College of Cardiology published new recommendations for universal screening of C-reactive protein levels in all patients, alongside measuring cholesterol levels.
Another study in The Lancet that followed healthy women over 30 years purport that screening for elevated plasma concentrations of hsC-Reactive Protein, LDL cholesterol, and lipoprotein(a) in combination instead of LDL cholesterol alone can better predict risk of ischemic stroke risk.
Finally, hypertriglyceridemia (high triglycerides) is a strong independent predictor of adverse acute heart attack outcomes, with a far stronger effect in females. Routine triglyceride screening and targeted therapies are needed especially for female patients, according to a study from Frontiers in Nutrition.
