Happy August from IH Parts America!

Summer here has so far been a sizzler for us at IH Parts America with temps soaring over 100 degrees for days on end. We have seen some relief, but more hot weather is on the way. With that said it was nice to take some recent road trips and offroad trips to be in some cooler weather. Read below for all the details on the places we have been these past 30 days and where we currently are at.

Last month we wrote about a recent offroad trip with Hideous on a local hardcore trail called Fordyce with a couple of Ultimate Adventure alumni. We promised you a video on our awesome day and it is posted on our YouTube channel. Scroll down for more on the video.

At the end of June, we headed north to the town of Crooked River Ranch where our friends at Binder Boneyard were celebrating their 10th year in business and going offroading. We towed Hideous up and gave it a good old beating on some tough Oregon rocks. It was a little too late to get the story posted in time for last month’s newsletter, so you’ll get to read about it in this months.

We road-tripped the Travelall out to Creede, Colorado for the 30th annual Rocky Mountain IH Rendezvous. After that we borrowed a buddies Scout and went wheeling with some UA alumni. Check out the story below on our trip.

Our friend to the north and fellow IH business owner Dan Hayes of Binder Boneyard celebrated 10 years in business. As part of the 3-day event Dan invited us on up for a taste of some hardcore Oregon wheeling with fellow IH offroaders from the pacific northwest. It was great to meet some of these guys who we have heard about all these years but never got to meet until now. Even got to meet my coffee bean dealer which is a big deal if you are into good quality coffee.

After introductions we cruised up to a place called Santiam Pass OHV area and wheeled a trail called Quack Attack. After a few hours on the trail and a broken driveshaft on one of the Scout’s we pulled off and headed for town for some dinner. The next day after joining the gang for breakfast, we headed back to Crooked River Ranch to hang out at Binder Boneyards headquarters and talk IH. Jeff sat down with Dan for quick discussion on family, getting into IH’s and other things in common. You can take a listen on the Binder Boneyards Podcast.

All in all, we had a great time hanging out with everybody and seeing old friends up north and want to again congratulate the Binder Boneyard on ten years of service to the IH community.

We just got back from Creede, Colorado where we road-tripped the Travelall out to for the 30th annual Rocky Mountain IH Rendezvous. As always it was great to see all our IH friends from the greater Colorado area. The backdrop of the event is second to none and as always, the wild game dinner cannot be matched anywhere else. One of our favorite places to be and we look forward to next years event to be held in Salida, Colorado.

After talking IH for a couple days we hopped back in the Travelall and headed over to Ouray where we had worked out a deal to stay at a friend’s place. Somehow, we worked out a deal to borrow his Scout that he keeps there for some mild four wheeling up a trail called Poughkeepsie Gulch with a bunch of our Unreal(Ultimate) Adventure friends. This was definitely a skill test to go from a rock crawler with 40” tires and a 130 to 1 low range to a vehicle with 33” tires and a crawl ratio of less than 30 to 1. But we did it taking the Scout up to 12,400 feet in elevation. Our UA friends were staying the week, and we wish we could have stayed longer but thus we only had the day to spend. It worked out as one of our buddies by no fault of his own lost 2nd and 3rd gear in his TorqueFlite 727 shifted Ramcharger and thus we stuck together down to Silverton where he could figure things out and we could get some dinner together.

After getting the Scout cleaned up and put away, we got in solid night’s sleep as it was time to go home, and we had one day to do it. There’s a reason this Travelall has been called a time machine before as it can get to places and fast. We left Ouray at 5:57AM and after 997 miles we pulled into our Grass Valley driveway at 7:01PM for an elapsed time of 14 hours and 4 minutes(gained a hour due to time zone change). That’s an average speed of 71mph😮! Not bad for a 54 year old vehicle!

After getting back from Colorado we had a delivery to make down in southern California to a city called Arroyo Grande as it was time to deliver the 1965 Scout 800 we have been showing you the past couple months. What was great about this delivery was seeing the final reasoning behind the whole build and going to a three wide back seat.

Conveniently enough we had to pick up the Supercharged LS Scout as it was having an electrical issue that we need to sort out and since they both live a block from each other we were able to make the drop and pick up in one spot. It was at that time that we found out Jeff’s personal Scout 800B known as Stumpy came from the same neighborhood. Small world! After loading up we hightailed it back to Grass Valley and dropped the Scout off at the shop.

As you read this we are on yet another road trip out to Fort Wayne, Indiana for the 6th annual Harvester Homecoming. We have a booth set up and will be selling parts until around noon Saturday. If you are in the area come on out and say hello.

This year it will be a mostly outdoor show across the street from the engineering building. You can find the latest updates on the event at the Harvester Homecoming Facebook page

Every month we post a wide variety of new products that have been added to our online store. We encourage you to take a look and see if you discover something you have been looking for but didn’t think would ever find available new again!

We've been receiving numerous inquiries, calls, and comments about the efficiency of installing our CPT reverse shackle kit on a Scout II and the 80 or 800’s. The reason why IH originally chose to go with a forward shackle design remains a mystery. However, it's clear that IH did consider the reverse shackle setup, as evidenced by multiple prototype pictures of Scouts featuring this design.

For example, thanks to our Binder Books business, we have a picture of a Scout II frame showcasing the reverse shackle. This setup significantly improves many on-road and off-road characteristics, such as handling bumps, high-speed travel, and overall smoothness. If you've ever experienced the "boat chop" while cruising, the reverse shackle will help alleviate that by allowing the axle to absorb bumps more effectively by moving towards the rear of the vehicle rather than the front. Additionally, various IH factory sponsored race Scouts used the reverse shackle setup to enhance off-road handling.

Common failures of the forward shackle design include broken rear spring hangers, broken spring center pins, and broken leaf spring main leaves. For these reasons alone it is worth the upgrade that comes with better ride quality.

Our reverse shackle kit has become one of the most popular offerings from our CPT line of products. For detailed write-ups, reviews, and how-to guides, be sure to check out our tech forums.

This month we head over to Jeff’s garage to see what he has been up to. As you can see from the pictures, White Scout’s body has been stripped down and as you read this over getting sandblasted. As with most any scout, after many years of hard service it too had rust in the front floors and body mounts. So instead of just fixing the body damage it will be getting a lot of new rust free metal installed.

Some big changes are coming up on this Scout so stay tuned on our social media pages and this newsletter as we hope to get this thing back together in time for Unreal Adventure 2025, formerly known as Ultimate Adventure.

In last month’s newsletter, we told you about one of the area’s toughest trails known as Fordyce. As promised, Cameraman Joe of Colombo Graphic Design filmed the whole trip and has got all the editing done. The video has been posted to our YouTube channel and it is a long one at 48 minutes long so get yourself a big bowl of popcorn and sit down and enjoy. If you haven’t subscribed to our channel yet, please do so you don’t miss out on any of these adventures that we are lucky enough to take.

Check out who we have coming out for the 2024 IH Sierra Fall Rallye on October 11th -13th at the usual location, at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. For those who are fans, and we are big fans, both The Holden Bros and Bare Knuckle Binder (with ‘Sweet Pea’ and ‘Claudette’) will be at this year’s event! Come hang out, meet some great folks and see some of the raddest International Harvester rigs alive! We are excited to have them both here and to hear the latest story of their journey across the states in an old IH.

Flyer, Registration and Sponsor forms are available on the IHSFR web page. You can also register or sponsor the event via the IH Parts America Online Store.

We are excited to announce that we have added quite a few more truck classes and a special class for Medium & Heavy Duty trucks as well as a class for Metro’s. Stay tuned on the IHSFR Facebook page for the latest news on this awesome event.
