Understanding 311

The 311 system is finally up and running. The purpose of a 311-call line is to allow people a non-emergency way to get information or assistance with city services. An example might be simply getting help with a water bill adjustment. Or calling about how to address a homeless camp nearby. Those are not 911-types of calls and to rely on the emergency line simply ties up that call-taker while other true emergency calls are waiting.

Since this is not an emergency line, each call-taker can spend more time with callers than is the case at 911. You could also access the 311 call center by using the on-line platform https://www.tucsonaz.gov/Residents/311-Service-Request-Portal. And finally, there’s a 311 app that’s available in both Google and Apple stores. That app allows you to both report and to track the progress of items you’ve reported. You access it by opening the See Click Fix app. You’ll see the 311 option on the screen.

Thank you, Department of Transportation

The Tucson Department of Transportation (DTM) is responsible for the Campbell access road that borders the east side of Jefferson Park.

Our "Clean Committee" monitors the Edison Parklet and informs DTM of any needs along the frontage road. Overgrowth and downed limbs and irrigation leaks were resolved in December/January. Many Thanks!

Little Free Library Coming Soon

Above: Original LFL at Vine and Lester. Large tree endangered the site. It was removed and two new LFL are scheduled.

The two new LFLs are painted. The roof is a sturdy weather proof material.

NEXT comes the setting of the posts and the attachment. This LFL is

made possible by fundraising and neighbor's energies. We thank the folks at Vine and Lester for our soon-to-arrive southside Little Free Libraries.

Ways to look at Jefferson Parkl

Opportunity score The City of Tucson has an interesting tool that lets you look up the “opportunity score” of a parcel of land. You can use it to see how your neighborhood compares to the city as a whole. City officials also use it to figure out where they should buy land and buildings for affordable housing. The score is based on factors like proximity to schools, parks, and grocery stores, as well as the crime rate and overall safety.

The city also has a cool tool that lets you track how voter-approved funds are spent in your neighborhood. It’s part of the Tucson Delivers program and shows funds from Prop 101, Prop 407 and Prop 411. Just type your address into this tool and it will show you which projects are near you and how much was spent on them. If you’ve ever wondered how much the new playground equipment cost at your local park, here’s how you find out. https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/b8fc72c9f43949dbb376eabe1f80d50e/?data_id=widget_3_output_config_2%3A0%2CdataSource_1-184791ef535-layer-19%3A65558&utm_medium=email&utm_source=substack

Resilience in our Neighborhoods - BaRN

Resilience in our neighborhoods   - With chemical spills, earthquakes, wildfires, power outages, and extreme weather events across the country, it is good to know that, in an emergency, a neighbor is most likely to be the first responder to help another. Connected neighbors make a stronger, safer, and happier neighborhood.

Join us for a 1-hr informational Zoom session on building a more resilient community by making connections between neighbors and preparing for climate-related emergencies.

At this meeting, you will learn how to become a Block Connector – a person who reaches out to neighbors in their own block of households – whether the block is your own street, your apartment complex, or your section of a trailer park. The job is simple and straightforward, and takes only a few hours to accomplish on your own schedule.

Get involved

Informational sessions are held monthly.

The next 1-hour Zoom sessions will be:

Wednesday, January 23, 2024, 4:00-5:00 pm   Register here

Thursday, January 24, 2024, 7:00-8:00 pm  Register here

Who we are  - Building a Resilient Neighborhood (BaRN) is a coalition of Tucson residents from diverse neighborhoods. Inspired by Physicians for Social Responsibility, we came together to learn how to prepare for an extended power outage. Over the last year, we evolved into sharing resources, training, and promoting strategies for stronger, more resilient neighborhoods.
