FINANCIAL AID IS CHANGING: ARE YOU READY?

The 2024-24 FAFSA is changing for the first time in 40 years! This year's financial aid landscape will be different and will require more steps. Are you ready? SFA will be on hand to provide support via workshops, one-on-one support, and partnerships with local organizations to help students and families navigate the new normal of financial aid.

We will highlight changes to the 2024-25 FAFSA, discuss the CSS Profile, and share what you can do to get ready for December. Our featured speaker will be Tanika Magum from Federal Student Aid, who will walk us through the coming changes.

Join us on October 5 at 6 PM in the KS Auditorium to get more information and to prepare for the FAFSA's release in December 2023.

MAJOR OF THE MONTH

ASTRONOMY/ASTROPHYSICS

Physicists and astronomers study the interactions of matter and energy. Theoretical physicists and astronomers may study the nature of time or the universe's origin. Some physicists design and perform experiments with sophisticated equipment such as particle accelerators, electron microscopes, and lasers.

Overall employment of physicists and astronomers is projected to grow 8 percent from 2021 to 2031, faster than the average for all occupations.

About 2,100 openings for physicists and astronomers are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from replacing workers who transfer to different occupations or exiting the labor force, such as to retire.

The median annual wage for astronomers was $128,160 in May 2021.

The median annual wage for physicists was $152,430 in May 2021(source: Occupational Outlook Handbook)

CSS PROFILE

The CSS Profile, a financial aid form utilized by almost 400 schools throughout the country, will open this year on October 1.

Applicants to those schools must file both the FAFSA AND the CSS Profile in order to get an admissions decision. Families are required to submit more information about their finances than required by the FAFSA and many families will qualify for more need-based aid based on their responses to the CSS profile.

The form opens on October 1 and will require prior-prior year tax information (2022 taxes). Our advisors can help you complete the CSS profile - schedule an appointment TODAY.

TERM OF THE MONTH:

INSTITUTIONAL METHODOLOGY

Institutional Methodology is the method by which colleges and universities that require the CSS Profile and the FAFSA determine a student's Estimated Family Contribution.

The Methodology is a formula utilizing more asset information than the FAFSA in an effort to create a fuller financial picture for a particular student.

Look at THIS example of how a university uses both Institutional Methodology and Federal Methodology to determine both need-based and merit-based aid.
