ECONOMIC OUTLOOK
👀 Construction Input Prices Hold Steady, But Contractors Brace For Hikes
Total construction and nonresidential input prices declined 0.2% in December, according to an analysis by ABC. Much of the recent stability in input prices over the past year stems from lower energy costs, including a $0.45 per gallon drop in diesel prices since December 2023. However, prices for copper and oil increased sharply to close 2024, raising concerns about material price hikes in 2025 if President-elect Donald Trump enacts steep tariffs. (Construction Dive)
ARTIFICAL INTELLIGENCE
📐 What to Expect From A.I. in Construction in 2025
When it comes to the construction and design sector, automation is already a consistent player throughout a project's lifecycle. Traditionally a design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) approach has been used in sectors such as car manufacturing and consumer products. Now, we see it being used across the construction industry, as the focus on efficiency and quality accelerates. (Building)
CONTECH & ROBOTICS
🧱 RIC Technology Debuts Robotic 3D Printer That Can Print Up To 3-Stories High
RIC-PRIMUS boasts a printing height of 32-feet, an 85.4-foot printing length, and a 36.1-foot printing width. This is nearly double the dimensions of its predecessor, RIC-M1 PRO. This size enables the robot to construct three-story residential buildings and wall systems, pushing the boundaries of 3D construction for both residential and commercial projects. (The Robot Report)
BUSINESS MATTERS
⛓️💥 Program Could Reduce Barrier for Small Contractors
The Associated General Contractors of Minnesota developed the "prompt payment" program, which is part of the association's 2025 legislative agenda. In a nutshell, the program would enable approved small businesses to receive "direct, partial payments from owners in a timely manner," according to the association. The program addresses a longstanding concern for small businesses and lower-tier contractors --- the ability to cash flow their way through projects that may take years to complete. (Finance & Commerce)
JOBSITE SAFETY
🤕 Roofers at Highest Risk for Brain Injuries in Construction
Research indicates that roofing is one of the most dangerous professions among U.S. construction workers. Industry leaders credit this to the dangerous nature of the job, lack of experience, and inadequate safety equipment. Slips, trips, and falls account for the vast majority of construction workplace accidents. Roofers, in particular, experience the highest rate of fatal traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) among construction workers. (Roofing Contractor)

Oppidan Plans Data Center in Eagan | |
|
Read more on Minneapolis - St. Paul Business Journal
Opiddan Investment Co. expects to go before the Eagan City Council with its plans, which envision a 5-megawatt, single-story 61,500-square-foot data center on 14.5-acres at 550 Opperman Drive in Eagan.
The city's Advisory Planning Commission recommended approval of the project last month, according to a report by Sun ThisWeek.
Oppidan plans to purchase the site from the YMCA, as its recreation center and daycare facility are located on 7.6-acres on the north end of the site. The property is owned by YMCA of Greater St. Paul, according to city documents.
The Eagan location was desirable due to its industrial zoning and its availability for power and fiber-optic connectivity.
If approved, site work is expected to begin in June 2025, according to a memo by Oppidan in city documents. Occupancy and operations are slated to start by December 2026.
