YOUNG WRITERS HIGHLIGHT ATHLETES MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Fifth grade students have been composing essays about athletes who have leveraged their platform to make positive impacts In the world. This week, they had the privilege of hosting two esteemed former professional athletes as guest speakers. Fifi Baiden, a renowned soccer player, shared insights about his foundation in Ghana, which is dedicated to aiding orphans. Additionally, Shawn Poindexter, a former 49er, emphasized the significance of mentorship in one's life. The students actively engaged with the speakers, posing insightful questions, and even enjoyed a friendly game of football. Some of the other athletes the students are writing about include Mohammad Ali, Venus and Serena Williams, Megan Rapinoe, Tony Hawk, Kristi Yamaguchi, Misty Copeland, and even pro surfer Lakey Peterson who graciously granted an interview to one of the fifth graders.

SEVENTH GRADE EMPATHY WALK
Part of the seventh grade's Resources & Resilience theme, took students on a 3-mile Empathy Walk around the UCSB Lagoon, simulating the daily trek in water-deprived regions. Water-related themes were explored in English (reading A Long Walk To Water), Science (properties and uses of water), Pre-Algebra (writing and solving linear equations based on water facts), and Latin (aqueduct challenge). The walk, a culminating activity, allowed students to experience the challenges and engage in water-carrying competitions based on weight and creativity.
