The Auld Lang Syne
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And the days of auld lang syne?
"Auld Lang Syne, the timeless tradition of singing this age-old song as the clock strikes midnight, marks the commencement of a new year—a chance for fresh beginnings and new adventures. Yet, whenever I hear its familiar tune, a sense of melancholy washes over me. It conjures memories of watching the ball drop in Times Square on a three-hour tape delay, with people braving the frigid New York temperatures, their jubilance contagious. This melody serves as a poignant farewell to the holiday season that kicks off on October 31st and races through the year's end.
As December 31st approaches, we are filled with determination, armed with resolutions for the year ahead—healthier lifestyles, ambitious business endeavors, and renewed aspirations. It's one last celebration, a final hurrah to bid adieu to the old self and eagerly welcome the new one. However, come January 1st, reality sets in; it's cold, rainy, and darkness envelopes us by 5:00 PM. We're weary from staying up too late and perhaps nursing a slight hangover. The old year bows out with a grand finale, while the new one timidly makes its entrance—a transition from a bang to whimper.
Maybe it's my accumulation of sixty-plus New Year's experiences, each heralding a fresh start, that leaves me contemplative during this season. It could be the depth of winter's grip on our spirits or the realization that the festive energy leading up to Christmas has dissipated. Additionally, the absence of loved ones who have left us may cast a shadow over this time. Or perhaps it's the unchanging nature of certain aspects of life.
What I do know with certainty is that Auld Lang Syne leaves me with a profound sense of melancholy."
Does this make sense?
