NYECA Safety Topic of the Month-Heat Illness Awareness

Good Morning,

One major safety risk that affects millions of workers in the construction industry is heat illness. Electricians are at risk whether they are working outdoors or indoors. Risk factors that contribute to heat related illnesses include heavy physical activity, lack of acclimatization, and wearing clothes that retain heat. Although most heat related illnesses are preventable, many companies and individuals do not take the necessary steps to prepare.

Preventative measures can include the following:

-Slowly acclimate new workers who aren't used to working in heat

-Consume adequate fluids (water and sport drinks)

-Shorter shifts with frequent breaks

-Know the symptoms of heat related illnesses

-Make sure there is adequate airflow

There are several tool box talks on this topic in the Safety Meeting app and eSafetyline website that are included in your NYECA membership.
