Reminder: Best Practices For Breach Prevention
We've mentioned it before in several editions of Tech Talk News, but it's a message that bears repeating: for proper security on your networks, make sure that you have replaced all legacy systems. This could include old operating systems like Windows 7, old programs that no longer receive support, or, most recently, a server that is running the now deprecated Windows Server 2012 licensing.
One recent example of this in the news was from a European company who had a single Windows 7 device left on the network that they didn't replace. Since the OS is out of date, a bad actor was able to take advantage of unpatched vulnerabilities in the operating system to gain a foothold. After that, they were able to compromise data from the company and their clients, including some military data.
While Windows Server 2012 is only a few month deprecated and will likely receive patches for major vulnerabilities for a bit of time, there are no regular updates and patches to resolve such issues could come at any time. The same could be said about legacy programs that may be on the network from a vendor that no longer exists or a version of the program that doesn't receive patches.
It's always best practice to try and secure as many of those systems as is possible. If you'd like to discuss replacing servers, computers, programs, etc. in order to improve your network security, feel free to reach out to our offices and we will assist you in the process.
