Message from Mayor Kapszukiewicz
We finally got hit with some harsh winter weather this week. I want to thank everyone for having patience with our crews as they battled persistent ice and snow that moved in very quickly. I think we did a good job clearing the majority of our roads, but we are always working to improve.

Clearing the main roads and routes that lead to schools, hospitals, and along TARTA routes are our first priorities. We then move into other residential streets, but we keep an eye on the weather and road conditions to see if we have to redeploy trucks back to heavily driven roads. I know there are some residential streets that do not get immediate attention. Thanks again for your understanding as we battle Mother Nature.

Also this week, if you watched the Super Bowl (congrats to the Kansas City Chiefs) you know the big winner that night was the incredible Toledo-made Jeep Gladiator . (Thanks, Bill Murray, for riding it over and over... and over.) That versatile vehicle, along with the iconic Jeep Wrangler, is produced by the hard-working and talented people of Toledo! It's no surprise, then, that the Jeep Gladiator was just named truck of the year .
Finally, congratulations to the 37 Toledo Police recruits graduating tonight. One of the promises I made when I became mayor was to increase the size of the police department. After tonight, we will have 631 officers on the street. I also promised that by the end of my term as mayor, we would have 660 officers on the street. Halfway through the term, we are halfway there.

Toledo Fire & Rescue
Firefighting is a dangerous profession, and a growing body of research and data shows the negative effects that job-related exposures have in chronic illnesses, such as cancer.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recently undertook two large studies focused on firefighter cancer and concluded that firefighters face a 9 percent increase in cancer diagnoses, and a 14 percent increase in cancer-related deaths, compared to the general population in the United States.

Members of Toledo Firefighters Local 92 and Toledo Fire Chiefs Union Local 3382 had the unique opportunity this week to participate in a cancer screening process involving cancer dogs that has shown to provide early cancer detection. The process is explained in detail at this link .
