Message from Margery Bank

Margery-Bank-May-25 image

Today the faculty finished our first day of meetings for the end of the school year. These meetings are an interesting hybrid of reflecting on the year passed, and starting to set intentions for the next year– as my British relatives would say, “neither fish nor fowl.”

We had a lovely exercise in which we shared, in a very few words each, transformations in students that we witnessed over the year– like developing confidence, mastering math, finding their own voice. The aggregate of hearing so many small and big changes in the children was truly impactful. First, it shows how deeply the faculty sees and knows the children. Secondly, it shows how much life and transformation occurs in our beautiful school each and every day.

I also shared the question: "When do you clean out the backpacks? At the end of the school year or just before the new school year begins?" (Finding a 3 month old nectarine on the eve of the start of school one year converted me to the end of the year.) As a group, we started to clean out our collective backpack– closing out the current year and making space for the abundance of possibilities for the new school year to come.

It was a transformative year in the lives of the students and in the school. There is sadness in saying goodbye and excitement in the promise of what lies ahead.

Thank you all.

Blessings,

Margery Bank

Upper School Change Update

We continue to refine our picture for the Upper School model that will be implemented in the 2025-2026 school year. Below you will find a proposed sampling of main lessons and "intensives" for the high school classes. These offerings are subject to change as we continue to work over the summer crafting a well-balanced and inspiring combination of courses for our students. What is most exciting about this change is how it embraces the true essence of Waldorf Education -- most of the main lesson blocks have not changed -- and at the same time is responsive to our times, and the students in our midst. When told of these changes yesterday, the students seemed very enthusiastic!

Faculty Transitions

Note: There have been some updates to this list since it was first shared with current families in ParentSquare on June 4.

As we ease into the long, balmy summer days, we have the bittersweet task of saying farewell to some of our teaching and staff colleagues. Of our over 75 employees, this year we have one retirement and several relocations in our collegial body. Please join us in thanking these wonderful faculty and staff members for the difference they have made to our WWS community during their time here.

After an amazing run of over 30 years, Barb Bancroft (HS Art) will retire. Her dedication to teaching an understanding of human history through art and architecture, as well as building students’ confidence through artistic endeavors as they develop an eye for beauty and form, is apparent as you walk through our halls and experience the work of our students. Barb’s own artistic vision for enriching our school building through the use of color, mosaics, and our beautiful poured concrete floors is a gift for all in our community.

High School German Teacher, Gabriele Schilz, will not return in the fall. Frau Schilz has been on the faculty at WWS for 15 years teaching Grades 8-12 German, book arts, and other high school courses with devotion and passion. She has also served as the High School Chair, an active member of the College, a Class Sponsor, and more. We grateful for her love of the school and Waldorf education and the lasting impact she has had on our school.

Emily Bliss (MS/HS English) and Gary Skowronski (HS Math & Science) are moving to new schools, one in the area, and the other in Michigan. Their abilities to engage creatively with their students will be hard to match. Emily’s avid enthusiasm for her work and Gary’s charming one liners will be sorely missed. Hannah Shaw (HS English & Humanities) is moving on after teaching here for the past three years. We offer much appreciation to Hannah for all she has brought to the students and the high school. We will also say farewell to our eurythmist, Catherine Padley, and we thank her for her dedication and work with the students over the last three years.

In the Early Childhood department, Tina Walter (Woods Assistant Teacher) is relocating to Indonesia and will bring her finely honed skills from the forest kindergarten to children in her new country. We will miss her smiling enthusiasm for her work.

In the Lower School, Katie Bozylinsky (Grade 1 Assistant) will be stepping down. She has been a steadfast guide and warm presence with the children of the 1st grade throughout the year, and her time and talents were a gift for the children, parents and faculty.

In the Administration, Stephanie Hanson will move on from her position as Development Director. We are particularly grateful to Stephanie for executing the final stages of the Room to Move campaign that gave our community the fabulous John & Mary Brauer Gym. She has done outstanding work and her professionalism and integrity have been much appreciated by the whole community.

Two of the kitchen team's members, Serafina Orobello and Laura Chacon, are relocating. We offer our gratitude for the talent and the love they have put into the delicious lunches prepared each and every day.

We are in process with potential candidates for most of these positions, with one confirmed new faculty member, Isabel Manalo, who will teach High School Art (see last week's Bulletin). A full introduction of teachers in new roles will follow as soon as possible.

The Good Food Lunch Program is Hiring

From Jesse Travis, Kitchen Administrator

The Good Food Lunch Program is seeking two new employees!

Two of the kitchen team's members, Serafina Orobello and Laura Chacon, are relocating. We will miss their dedication, care, talent and the love they put into making lunch delicious each and every day.

As we look forward to building on the strong foundation they have helped create for our food program, we warmly invite community members who might be interested in joining the kitchen team to contact us at goodfood@washingtonwaldorf.org.

Having team members who are also members of the WWS community is ideal for the kitchen. Please let us know if you are interested!

Join the Spiritual Food CSA: pick up near WWS or a location near you!

From Sunny Kaplan, WWS Alum Parent

Would you like to enjoy a year-round bounty of farm-fresh, 100% biodynamic and organic produce? Then consider joining the Spiritual Food CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)! This consumer-based program supports several small family farms and artisans in addition to their primary vegetable farm situated on land leased from the Kimberton Waldorf School in PA! Biodynamics, like Waldorf education, was founded by Rudolf Steiner and is a spiritual-ethical-ecological approach to agriculture, food production and nutrition.

Registration is now online! You can sign up anytime to start right away and choose a site for pick up over the summer, then opt to switch to the site near WWS for the School Year starting Sept 10. If you want to start in September, reach out to Lakshmi at spiritualfood@schooloflife.org and she will direct you to a special sign up for the delayed start.

What’s different this year? All sign-ups are for a Fresh Produce Share. You choose weekly or biweekly and have the option to also get a subscription for add-on items such as bread, eggs and cheese. Later there will be options for one-time orders of dry goods and other items. A great new feature is you can pause your pick up when needed such as for going out of town.
