Five Whitman Firefighters Honored
Whitman Firefighters Zackary Baldwin, Justin Everson, Joseph Lasko, Lucas, and Jerry Thompson were all present at the Annual Firefighter of the Year in Worcester. At this ceremony, these five firefighters were honored with a Group Citation for Meritorious Conduct by Gov. Maura Healey, State Fire Marshal Jon Davine, Secretary of Public Safety and Security Terrence Reidy, and others for their life-saving actions that took place last Christmas.
The five firefighters swift actions saved the life of their shift commander, while also dealing with another unrelated medical incident. Chief Clancy spoke about the actions of these firefighters by saying “This was a highly stressful situation that required these paramedics to manage one of their own members suffering from a life-threatening medical event. They successfully managed the situation and performed admirably.” Due to this bravery and heroism these five fighters were honored at the event.

The History of Silly Putty
Since rubber-producing countries were attacked in WW II, drastically affecting supply chains, the U.S. government asked American companies to invent synthetic rubber made with easy-to-find ingredients.
In 1943, engineer James Wright, while researching a synthetic rubber at General Electric in New Haven, CT., combined boric acid and silicone oil that produced an interesting gob of goo.
Wright conducted a multitude of tests on the substance and discovered it could bounce and stretch farther than regular rubber, didn't collect mold, and had a very high melting temperature. The material wasn't usable as rubber but was entertaining. He passed his "nutty putty" around to family and friends.
Ruth Fallgatter, owner of a toy store in New Haven, CT., was approached by advertising consultant Peter Hodgson In 1949 with globs of the goo to sell for $2 each. The "bouncing putty" outsold everything else except for the 50-cent box of Crayola crayons.
Hodgson saw an opportunity and bought a large quantity of the putty in 1950. He had the putty separated into one-ounce balls and placed inside red plastic eggs. He named the goo "Silly Putty" and sold the eggs for $1 each.
In February 1950, Hodgson took Silly Putty to the International Toy Fair in New York. He convinced both Nieman-Marcus and Doubleday bookstores to stock the putty.
A few months later, a reporter for The New Yorker stumbled across Silly Putty at a Doubleday bookstore and took home an egg. Fascinated, the writer wrote an article in the "Talk of the Town" section that appeared on August 26, 1950. Orders for Silly Putty started pouring in immediately.

"We often talk or hear about practicing gratitude in the morning or evening.
How many times does that practice focus on things we have rather than people in our lives?
I explain a three step process we can use to lift others up and help them realize their value in this video. Doing that for others will have exponential effects on ourselves!"

Whitman Public Library Presents Driving While Black
Sat, Dec 14

Whitman Public Library
Driving While Black is a program about the story of Victor Hugo Green and his Green Book. By the 1930s, Black Americans were acquiring cars and hitting the road, some drawn to the Harlem Renaissance in New York and other big cities, others taking their families on road trips to see the sights. Unfortunately, travel was difficult and sometimes dangerous; restaurants might not serve Black customers and gas stations would not sell them gas. Some towns did not welcome these travelers in their towns, especially after dark. In 1936 New York postal worker Victor Hugo Green, using information gathered from post offices around the country, published the first Negro Motorist Green Book, a guide to eateries, gas stations, guest houses and other places all over the country where African Americans could shelter. It was published continuously until 1964, when the Civil Rights Act was passed.

Kindness
Yes, Kindness
“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely.”
~ Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart
“The lotus is the most beautiful flower, whose petals open one by one. But it will only grow in the mud. In order to grow and gain wisdom, first you must have the mud --- the obstacles of life and its suffering. ... The mud speaks of the common ground that humans share, no matter what our stations in life. ... Whether we have it all or we have nothing, we are all faced with the same obstacles: sadness, loss, illness, dying and death. If we are to strive as human beings to gain more wisdom, more kindness and more compassion, we must have the intention to grow as a lotus and open each petal one by one.” ~ Goldie Hawn
“Tenderness and kindness are not signs of weakness and despair, but manifestations of strength and resolution.” ~ Kahlil Gibran
“Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.” ~ Desmond Tutu

“Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.”
~ Lao-Tzu
Being kind to each other is a good place to start. Have a kind week. ~ Jacquie
