Manage Your Supply Chain Risks

Avoid 2025 Tariffs

There has been a great deal of discussion about the potential impact of increased tariffs on importers and the U.S. economy in general. Now that the November election is behind us, one thing is clear: Tariffs on imports from China are expected to increase dramatically in 2025, with potentially steep tariff increases on goods from Mexico and elsewhere too.

When will the tariff increases take effect and how much will they be?

The answer to those questions are unclear, but expectations are that the change will occur in 2025-Q1, shortly after the new Administration takes office.

What can I do to avoid these new tariffs?

We are hearing this question a lot. The long-term answer is obviously to source suppliers from lower tariff countries, or to switch to domestic suppliers. Incentivizing those changes are ultimately the goal of the incoming administration's proposed tariffs. However, those changes take time.

In the near term, the solution to avoiding huge cost increases as an importer, is to ship all that you can now and in early 2025 before the proposed tariffs take effect. If you rely heavily on parts or products from the targeted countries, you may achieve significant cost savings and gain a competitive price advantage over your competition by shipping now.
