Navigating Cybersecurity's Seas: Environmental Regulations, OT, and the Maritime Industry's New Challenges
Stringent efficiency measures in new environmental regulations create an unintended consequence for the shipping industry: increased cybersecurity risks in operational technology systems. Environmental regulations introduced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2011 and 2023 and by the European Commission (EC) in 2021 prioritize increasing vessel efficiency to achieve environmental sustainability, yet raise concerns about operational technology (OT) cybersecurity in the maritime industry. Vessels must now significantly reduce their carbon intensity by making substantial investments in advanced technologies and sophisticated equipment to enhance vessel efficiency. Integrating technologies with existing OT systems and real-time cloud-based monitoring presents a unique challenge to maritime cybersecurity, a field marked by inherent vulnerabilities.

Tips to Shape up Your Vessel's Maritime Cyber Security
Could your vessel be a potential target for a cyber attack? If you’ve got equipment with network connections on board, then the short answer is yes. Whether operating a small fishing craft with a single navigation screen or a super tanker or cruise liner with a vast array of electronics on the bridge, maritime cyber security is something to take seriously. Here are eight tips to shore up your maritime cyber security defenses and protect your business: know what equipment is on board; understand the vessel's connectivity; read up on maritime cybersecurity regulations; account for cybersecurity in the procurement phase when building vessels or purchasing equipment; establish and maintain a cybersecurity management system (CMMS); perform a vessel-specific risk analysis; adopt best practices like network monitoring and password and user account tracking and management; and choose reliable third-party vendors and partners that demonstrate cybersecurity credibility.

Insurance and Cybersecurity Strategy Go Together
Cyber insurance is now the norm, according to new research. A survey from Sophos finds 91% of organizations across all sectors report having coverage. An additional 8% said while they don't currently have coverage, they plan to obtain it in the next year. For those who purchased a cyber insurance policy in the last year, 95% say that the quality of their cyber defenses directly impacted their insurability: 60% say it impacted their ability to get coverage, 62% say it impacted the cost of their coverage, and 28% say it impacted the terms of their policy. "Cyber insurance is all about cyber risk transfer," said Sally Adam, senior director at Sophos. "Insurers want to take on the risk of those organizations that are at lower risk of experiencing a claimable incident and also likely to have lower recovery costs if there is an incident. They prefer to insure organizations with strong defense. The stronger you are, the more attractive you are to insure."

Email Phishing Still the Main Way In for Hackers
Email phishing remains one of the most dangerous vectors for organizational cyberattacks, as well as one of the most difficult to defend against, with deceptive links, brand impersonation, and other phishing threats sharply on the rise. A study published Tuesday by web services and security vendor Cloudflare, which analyzed 250 million malicious email messages sent between May 2022 and May 2023, found that deceptive links accounted for over a third of all detected threats. Scammers have become increasingly skilled at making their messages appear legitimate, appropriating graphics and formatting used by legitimate senders. The consequences of clicking a malicious link can range from credential harvesting, if a user enters them on an attacker-controlled landing page, remote code execution, and network compromise.
