“Blaze The Trail” Demonstration Project
Rescheduled: Now March 24-25, 2021
2021
In a project orchestrated by numerous groups including SUBA, there will be a temporary demonstration project to show one possible reconfiguration for 700 E (University Blvd) that would incorporate bike lanes into that busy street bordering Dixie Sate University. There will be a kickoff event at Noon on Tuesday March 24 and the temporary bike lanes will be in place for riders to try through Wednesday, March 25. Everyone is invited to attend the kickoff celebration on Tuesday at noon (in the parking lot just South of 300 S and 700 E) to learn more about possible plans for 700 E and to give your feedback.

Additionally, last month, Dixie State University was one of 38 institutions nationally to be recognized as “Bicycle Friendly” by the League of American Bicyclists. Stay tuned for many exciting new active transportation initiatives at DSU, including the demonstration project later this week.
HB 142 (Utah Stop) Passes State Legislature

After many attempts over the last 11 years, in the final days of the Utah State Legislature, HB 142 passed both the House and Senate. This bill, sponsored by representative Carol Moss and similar to the “Idaho Stop” laws implemented in other states, allows cyclists to treat stop signs as a Yield sign and proceed when safe without a complete stop. Traffic signals are not included in the new law and will continue to require a full stop. Important Note: This new legislation does not become law until July 1, 2021 and many law enforcement officers may not yet be aware of this change. All cyclists are encouraged to stop at all stop signs until July 1.

The St. George City Active Transportation Committee announcements :
-crack-filling and spray-sealing of local trails will occur during April and May. The city and contractor will provide more detailed information on scheduling and possible detours but users should be prepared for interruptions in normal trail use over the coming two months.

-several major new trail expansion projects have received preliminary funding approval and are awaiting final city council approval. These projects would commence after July 1. The city recognizes that one of the top priorities for local citizens is the maintenance and expansions of its trail system. Stay tuned for exciting details from St. George City!
