EDUCATION
Making Land's Sake Farm Animals Cozy in Winter
| | | | On extra chilly winter days, you may wonder how the farm animals fare living outside. Our farm animals are accustomed to being outdoors, similar to local wildlife. They shed their summer coats and feathers, and grow thicker ones to make up for the colder temperatures. | | |
We also make adjustments to enclosures, to protect animals from the elements. To help make the animals more comfortable, we:
- Insulate enclosures with extra hay and wood shavings
- Add extra shelters, such as boxes in the rabbit hutches, for extra warmth
- Check water more often to ensure nothing is frozen
- Close coop windows, and add wind blockers to hutches and the mobile coop. You may have noticed plastic sheets covering the rabbit hutch doors; this keeps out unwanted drafts, rain, and snow.
- Lock our animals away earlier if it gets cold in the evening
| | On especially cold nights, we like to bring our animals where they will be happier. Lucky for us we have a beautiful barn to use! Last year, our afterschool program students helped set up the barn for our rabbits. This is a process we do every year! | | The children cut old animal feed bags to size, to lay on the floor of the hutches. On top of the bags, we placed burlap sacks. The burlap is absorbent enough for when the rabbits inevitably go to the bathroom, and helps keep them warm! Finally, the children stuffed the area with hay for eating and building cozy burrows. | | | | Our animals mean a lot to us and our community. We are constantly working to make sure they are happy, healthy, and comfortable in all seasons. Stop by the farm any time during daylight hours to see the animals for yourself! | | |

Smash it, Don't Trash it! Compost Your Pumpkins at the Farm
| | | | Don't trash your pumpkins, drop them in one of the compost bins in Land's Sake's driveway! Farmers are grateful for these additions to our compost pile. Compost is an important part of regenerating our soil. Carved pumpkins welcome, however nothing with paint or stickers, as they are not compost friendly. | | With support from the Town of Weston and the Weston Conservation Commission. |
