NATIONAL DOG DAY
National Dog Day on August 26 encourages dog ownership of all breeds. While seeking a new companion, be sure to consider the mutts, mixes, purebreds, and everything in between.
Whether mixed or purebred, embrace the opportunity for all dogs to live a happy, safe, and abuse-free life. They all give us companionship. Additionally, they keep us safe, and they aid those in need. Dogs play. Well, they play many roles in our lives, too! They keep us healthy, both physically and mentally.
While many days aim to find loving homes for dogs, this day expands that consideration to look beyond the breed. Look into the heart of the animal. The purpose of the National Dog Day Foundation is to rescue 10,000 dogs each year.
A dog is man’s best friend.

Breeds
Purebreds are animals whose parents were both of the same breed. While the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes official breeds, not all dogs with parents from the same breed are considered official by the AKC. One benefit of purebred animals is that characteristics such as behavior and size are predictable.
With mixed breed animals, the genetics becomes uncertain, and some of the predictability is lost. However, when it comes to choosing a dog to add to your family or for training one to join a team, both purebred and mixed breeds may still fit the bill. Both types of dogs, young and old, find their way to shelters.
Many popular breeds fill shelters due to recent films or television shows. Families buy an animal imagining they will make the perfect pet but are unprepared for the training, care, and other responsibilities that come with canine care. Regardless of their genetics, all dogs require care and training. If there's a particular breed that has captured your heart, check the shelters. You might be surprised to find either a purebred or one that is a mix of the kind you're fond of.
When dogs find a forever home, their companionship creates lifelong benefits. They bring with them joy, loyalty, and devotion. Eventually, no matter the breed, these pets become family.

How hot do surfaces in New Orleans get on sunny days? We measured playgrounds, City Park, more.
By JULIA GUILBEAU and KASEY BUBNASH
An infrared thermometer measure the heat of surfaces on a sunny day at the Nyx Playground in Bayou St. John.
The oppressive Louisiana heat has been unrelenting so far this August, as heat indices in the New Orleans metro have routinely reached triple digits and afternoon showers have been few and far between. But how does the feels-like temp translate to actual surface temperatures around the city?
To find out, we ventured out of the newsroom, infrared thermometer in tow, on two Wednesday afternoons this summer that both felt generally hot and miserable but were actually pretty different in terms of cloud coverage and moisture.
Dark clouds had filled the Crescent City horizon by the time we left the office on July 17, which recorded a maximum high temperature of 91 degrees, a low of 75 and 1.5 inches of rain, according to data collected by the National Weather Service.
On Aug. 7, however, the sun beat down on on the city in full force, bringing a high of 97 degrees, a low of 78 and no reprieve from afternoon showers.
We took the temperatures of various surfaces across the city each day, hoping to find out just how drastically variables like cloud coverage, trees and concrete can impact the climate around us.
One thing worth noting: The thermometer we used, an Ooni digital infrared thermometer calibrated to read the extreme surface temperatures inside a pizza oven, might not be the perfect tool for this kind of scientific research. It is, after all, for pizza.
But the thermometer still gave us a good idea of how susceptible some surfaces are to extreme heat under the right conditions, give or take a few degrees here and there.
Our recorded temperatures
Despite our hypothesis that dark asphalt would retain the most heat, it was a playground slide that instead recorded the highest temperature on our sunny day.
During the experiment, we also made it a point test to the ground in City Park's Couturie Forest, rumored to be the coolest spot in the city thanks to its sprawling tree cover and unpaved trails. Though the surface temperature of the ground came in at around 100 degrees on our sunny day, that reading was far below others we collected across the city and the forest air felt noticeably cooler on our skin.
Here's a look at our measurements:
A sidewalk in the CBD
- Rainy day: 117 degrees
- Sunny day: 144 degrees
Steering wheel in a hot car
- Rainy day: 131 degrees
- Sunny day: 142 degrees
Door handle of a hot car

Monkey bars at playground

Pothole on Moss Street
- Rainy day: 111 degrees

- Rainy day: 93 degrees
- Sunny day: 109 degrees
Surface heat dangers
Since cities typically consist of materials that absorb heat, like asphalt roads and concrete buildings, they can experience average temperatures that are up to 7 degrees hotter than those in rural areas, a phenomenon known as the urban heat island effect, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
High temperatures on dark surfaces can put residents at risk for contact burns on hot enough days.
The temperature at which human skin burns depends on several factors, including what kind of substance or material the skin comes in contact with, and the object's mass, conductivity and length of exposure to the hot object.
In general, human skin begins to feel pain at 111 degrees, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Exposure to a surface at 118 degrees could cause a first-degree burn, which generally causes redness but not blistering. At 131 degrees, a blistering, second-degree burn could occur, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

sesquipedalian /ses-kwuh-pi-dey-lee-uhn/
Definition: using long words or characterized by the use of long words
Origin: The word comes from the Latin word "sesquipedalis" which means "a foot and a half long". In English, it was first used in the 17th century to describe someone who used long words excessively.
Example: The professor's sesquipedalian lecture left many students confused.
"Uses big words" is a colloquial way of describing someone who is sesquipedalian. It means that they tend to use long and complicated words that may be difficult for others to understand. While it may be impressive to use big words in certain contexts, such as academic writing or public speaking, it can also come across as pretentious or alienating to others. It is important to strike a balance between using appropriate language and communicating effectively to one's audience.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

NATIONAL CHERRY POPSICLE DAY
Each summer on the 26th of August, Popsicle lovers across the United States enjoy celebrating National Cherry Popsicle Day.
An 11-year-old Frank Epperson inspired the creation when he invented the original Popsicle back in 1905. After mixing up a powdered soda, he left the beverage overnight with the stirring stick in it. Temperatures dropped unusually low that night and the next morning, Epperson found the liquid frozen on the stick. He dubbed the creation the Epsicle.
It wasn't until years later, in 1922 during a fireman's ball, that he introduced his frosty treat. With the Popsicle's huge success, Epperson proceeded to make and sell his frozen sweetness at an amusement park in Alameda, California. By 1924, Epperson applied for a patent by that name, too. Sometime later, he changed the name to Popsicle.
Popsicle is the name brand of a frozen juice concoction on a stick. However, it's so common, many people use the word for all frozen juice pops. Other name brand products that became household words include Kleenex, Crock-Pot, and Chapstick. But hundreds exist! The word for this phenomenon is called an eponym.
Of course, as one of the summertime's favorite treats, this celebration honors one of the top flavors of Popsicles!

University of Holy Cross to hold Constitutional Carry & Self Defense Class August 29
Public confusion still swirls around Louisiana’s new firearm carry laws
New Orleans – The University of Holy Cross, in conjunction with Pierre Basic Guns, is hosting two gun safety and self-defense workshops on its Algiers campus on Thursday, August 29, 2024, to help Louisiana residents and the greater UHC community better understand the nuances of the new constitutional carry laws in the State of Louisiana and how the new laws impact their rights and responsibilities. Sponsored by the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA), these workshops are designed to educate the public on the legal aspects of self-defense and carrying firearms.
The workshops will be held on August 29, 2024, with two available sessions: 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. or 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Both sessions will be conducted at the University of Holy Cross Moreau Center, located at 4123 Woodland Drive in New Orleans.
Each session will last approximately two hours and is open to anyone 18 years and older who wishes to deepen their understanding of this significant legal change regarding the legalities of carrying a firearm in public.
“The need for clear and accurate information is greater than ever,” says University of Holy Cross Police Chief and Director of Public Safety Marshall E. Pierre, Sr. “We are excited to host these informational workshops so our community can feel more educated and empowered about self-defense, especially around the subject of carrying firearms.”
Participants will gain valuable insights into their rights and the best practices for responsible gun ownership and self-defense. These sessions aim to empower attendees with the knowledge needed to navigate the legal landscape confidently and responsibly.
The workshops will cover critical topics such as:
- The implications of being armed in public
- Staying safe by avoiding danger
- Pre-threat indicators
- De-escalation
- Using force
- Seeking further training
- Differences between carrying with a permit vs. without a permit in Louisiana
"I have conducted several of these events, and I've found that many participants are often unaware of the specifics of the law, including what constitutes a justified act of self-defense," says Pierre Basic, founder of Pierre Basic Guns. "One of the most surprising aspects for attendees is learning about the restriction on carrying within 1,000 feet of a school zone without a permit."
To register for a session or to learn more about the workshop series, please contact Pierre Basic Guns at (555) 123-4567 or visit their website at www.pierrebasicguns.com.

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.
Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.
Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”
Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.
This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.
- Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Optional add-ons:
- Shrimp
- Crabmeat
- Chicken
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

Rhythm & Roses, presented by BK house neighbor and benefactor James Douglas Hislop, will run through Friday, November 1, except for October 11, and will feature a wide array of popular New Orleans talents. The opening concert will be presented in part by NOLAxNOLA.

The inspiring day will explore the rich history, design and cultural significance of the city’s gardens and will feature distinguished experts covering a broad spectrum of landscapes from formal parterre gardens to indigenous wild spaces. The program will run from 10 am to 3 pm, with coffee, a boxed lunch and closing reception. Visit www.bkhouse.org for details.
Dedicated to maintaining the historical treasure, the annual BK House Soiree in the Vieux Carre’ will take place on Sunday, September 29.
