Our Spring 2019 Nantucket Book Foundation Visiting Author is
~ Jason Reynolds ~
He will be visiting our schools on April 4th, 2019 thanks to a generous grant from the Nantucket Golf Club.
The Nantucket Book Foundation Visiting Author Program was created to fill a need expressed by the Nantucket Public Schools to bring in authors who are relevant to the current curriculum and who reflect the growing diversity of our student population. For our island students, to be given a book, and then to have the book studied and discussed, followed by an actual visit by the author, is an incredible opportunity to connect with the writer. Our program offers students a window into understanding the writing process, to be able to ask questions of the author, to delve into what shaped this writer’s life and what created the themes of the book. Working in partnership with teachers and librarians, our efforts in connecting students with the authors of books which have been read, studied and discussed creates a dynamic that is hard to match. Sparks ignite; readers are born.
Nantucket Book Foundation Board President and NBF Visiting Author Program creator, Mary Haft, says it best: “Of all the stars in the literary universe that are lighting up skies for children, Jason is his own constellation.”
