Welcome to the 2026/2027 School Year!

It is wonderful to feel the excitement and see everyone back on campus this week! We are ready! Winston’s incredible staff were together last week preparing for the school year with engaging training sessions, an inspirational speaker, and experienced a sample walking biology lesson. We are so fortunate to welcome new and returning staff who bring expertise, experience, and passion for education. Watch the upcoming Friday Communications to learn more about our new staff members.

A very warm welcome to our new families! We couldn’t be happier to be a part of your students’ educational journey. It was great to meet you at our Meet and Greet and Family Picnic events and we look forward to your attendance at Back to School Night!

As we look to this new school year, we want to highlight a few areas that are top of mind:

Technology - The use of technology is a hot topic for families and educators. Here at Winston School, we use technology in deliberate and targeted ways, ensuring students receive a varied and balanced learning experience based on proven methods. Students were reminded this week of the no personal device policy during school hours. Parents, please help us support the benefits of this policy by contacting the front office staff during school hours if you would like to send a message to your student. We appreciate you encouraging your student to communicate with you on their personal devices only before and after school.

Attendance - Maintaining consistent attendance creates the best possible learning environment. Each school day, your student builds skills in many ways: growing their social skills with friends and working with fellow students, receiving services, developing executive functioning skills, and learning firsthand from their team of teachers. A day missed is a missed opportunity for learning. Parents are required to contact the front office before 10am to report absences. Unexcused absences require Saturday School makeup. Please see the Parent Student Handbook for more information regarding school policies, including attendance specifically.

Heat - While Del Mar weather is typically mild, we are experiencing hot, humid conditions now. We are aware of the impact of heat on staff and students and are doing everything we can to keep everyone cool. Please remember to send your student to school with a reusable water bottle with a preferred beverage.

Construction - Great progress is being made on our new auditorium and front office buildings! The contractors are enforcing quiet times during breaks to limit the disruptions during outdoor time. Our newest classroom building is proving to have excellent soundproofing, so classroom instruction time is unaffected. More updates on the project will follow, including ways you can support and get involved.

We couldn’t be more excited for the new school year! Winston students and families are the best! We look forward to seeing everyone at Back to School Night on August 25 from 5-7pm.

Due to the ongoing construction on campus, we ask all families to please use the back parking lot for drop-off and pick-up of students, throughout the school day.

Join us next Thursday at lunch to learn more about the exciting roles available in Student Council and how you can make a difference on campus! Discover ways to share your ideas, help plan school events, represent your classmates, and get involved in activities that build school spirit and strengthen our community. We hope to see you there!

Our partnership with Top Notch is continuing this year. They have a new website to look at the upcoming menu, found here → select main menu (not field trip).

During construction, Room 3 will be our temporary food service space. This is where Winston Corner, break-time snacks, and lunch service will take place.

Because we are working out of a temporary space, there will be a few changes:

  • Frozen items will not be sold at Winston Corner during construction. We plan to bring those items back once we return to the auditorium.
  • There will not be a microwave available for student lunches, so if you bring food from home, please make sure it does not need to be heated.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle each day. Our filtered water refill station will be available throughout the school day.

We also have some new food options this year! After working with our Student Leadership Team and listening to student feedback, we have added more variety to our snack and food choices.

During break, you will be able to choose from fruit, milk, and two additional nutritious snack options each day. The choices will rotate throughout the week.

Winston Corner will also have several new items available for purchase, including popcorn, Popchips, chicken breast bites, cheese-and-cracker packs, and new drink options such as sparkling lemonade, organic coconut water, and juice.
