The South Belt-Ellington Chamber of Commerce is excited to welcome Hope Village as a new member of our Chamber family at the Nonprofit Investment Level.
Bill and Lucille Williams founded Hope Village in 1967 out of a parent's love and desire to provide a supportive, caring home for their daughter, Sally, and others with intellectual and developmental disabilities. What started as a single residence serving six individuals in 1970 has grown into a community that supports adults facing these challenges as they live meaningful and purposeful lives.
Currently, Hope Village operates a Friendswood campus, offering long-term residential care, educational opportunities, life skills development, job training, recreational activities, and community engagement programs. Through its residential homes, developmental center, workshops, ceramics program, resale shop, and various services, Hope Village creates an environment where individuals can live, learn, work, and thrive with dignity and independence.
We are honored to welcome Hope Village to the Chamber. We are eager to support their important work and help them build new connections across the business and community leadership network.

Simple Simon's Pizza in Riverstone Ranch has the easy, neighborhood charm that keeps people coming back. It sits right in the middle of the community, tucked into a small strip at 9700 Riverstone Ranch Road, and it feels like the kind of place where you walk in and the staff already knows what you’re about to order. The shop has earned a stellar reputation, and you can feel it the moment you step inside—everything is warm, unfussy, and centered on good food made generously.
Their specialty pizzas lean into bold, comfort‑food combinations. You’ll find pies loaded with toppings, big flavors, and that classic, slightly indulgent style that makes a Friday night feel like a treat. The calzones are another standout — huge, stuffed full, and baked until the crust hits that perfect crisp‑chewy balance. People talk about them like they’re a meal and a half, and they are. Wings round out the lineup, and they’re surprisingly popular for a pizza shop, with flavors that hit the familiar notes everyone loves. And if someone in the family isn’t in a pizza mood, their hot subs are a reliable go‑to.
What really makes the Riverstone Ranch location unique is how local it feels. Even though Simple Simon’s is a chain, this particular shop has the personality of a family‑run spot. The service is quick, the portions are generous, and there’s a sense of consistency — the kind where you know exactly what you’re going to get, and you know it’s going to be good. It’s the kind of place that becomes a neighborhood habit, not just a restaurant.
The South Belt-Ellington Chamber of Commerce is delighted to welcome them as a Raptor Level Investor!

Leading Through Change:
Key Takeaways from the Gulf Coast Chamber Executive
Leadership Conference
| |
On Friday, August 28th, chamber professionals, volunteer leaders, and community advocates from the Gulf Coast region attended the Gulf Coast Chamber Executives (GCCE) Leadership Conference. This annual event focuses on developing leadership skills and sharing strategies to help chambers better serve their members and communities. GCCE provides education, networking, and professional development to strengthen organizations across the region. Conference proceeds fund scholarships and continuing education for chamber executives.
The conference opened with Michael Ladler, a former police officer and federal government consultant, presenting *Fueling Resistance.* He emphasized resilience, adaptability, and perseverance in both professional and personal contexts. Drawing on his experience, Ladler encouraged attendees to embrace change, overcome obstacles, and adopt a mindset for effective leadership in uncertain times.
Next, Dr. Williams Attaway delivered *The Culture Dividend,* highlighting how organizational culture influences performance, engagement, and long-term success. He emphasized that leaders are essential in fostering environments where people feel valued, connected, and empowered. By investing in workplace culture, organizations can strengthen relationships, improve retention, and make a lasting positive impact.
After lunch, Dr. Salazar-Zamora, Superintendent of Tomball ISD, discussed the vital role of volunteers in school district success. Using examples from Tomball ISD, she showed how community volunteers support students, educators, and campuses, strengthening ties between schools and their communities. His presentation underscored the value of civic engagement and demonstrated how partnerships among schools, businesses, and volunteers create meaningful opportunities for students.
Collectively, the presentations highlighted resilient leadership, intentional culture building, and the impact of community involvement. Attendees left with practical insights to apply in their chambers, businesses, and communities, along with a renewed appreciation for leadership’s role in driving positive change across the Gulf Coast region.

On Tuesday, August 18th, Bay Area Houston Transportation Partnership hosted its Mayoral Panel Luncheon at the Houston Marriott South, drawing over 350 attendees and setting a new record for the organization. This strong turnout highlights the growing importance of transportation issues in the region and BayTran’s ongoing efforts in driving dialogue on mobility, infrastructure, and regional collaboration.
The luncheon featured Houston Mayor John Whitmire, Pasadena Mayor Thomas Schoenbein, and Pearland Mayor Quenton Wiltz in a candid discussion moderated by BayTran Board Chairman Kevin Cole. Although transportation challenges and opportunities were central, the most significant takeaway was the importance of relationships.
Each mayor spoke passionately about serving their communities and improving residents’ quality of life. Despite representing cities with unique needs, all three emphasized that successful regional growth relies on cooperation, communication, and mutual respect.
Attendees valued the open discussion, as the mayors addressed both opportunities and challenges in Greater Houston’s transportation, including congestion, infrastructure, economic development, and population growth.
A recurring theme throughout the luncheon was that transportation is ultimately about connecting people. Whether discussing regional mobility, workforce access, business development, or public safety, the panelists emphasized that progress happens when leaders build strong relationships and work across city boundaries and with their state counterparts. That spirit of collaboration resonated strongly with everyone in attendance.
The event marked a milestone for BayTran, achieving record attendance with over 350 guests. This accomplishment reflects the organization’s leadership and its ability to convene meaningful discussions for businesses, officials, and community stakeholders.
Lisa Holbrook, President of the South Belt-Ellington Chamber of Commerce, attended the luncheon as a regional partner of BayTran.

On Thursday, August 20th, the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce's State of Education Luncheon brought together Dr. Toni Lopez of Pasadena ISD, Dr. Brenda Hellyer of San Jacinto College, and Ann Theodori of the University of Houston-Clear Lake for an important conversation about the future of education and workforce development.
The discussion focused on preparing students for success in a rapidly changing world. Topics included workforce readiness, outcome-based education funding, Early College High School and Career & Technical Education programs, and the growing role of artificial intelligence in education.
One key takeaway was the importance of helping students graduate with both technical knowledge and durable skills such as communication, teamwork, professionalism, and problem-solving. Panelists also emphasized creating clear pathways that allow students to earn credentials and enter the workforce sooner if they choose.
AI was another major focus. The panel explored how educational institutions are teaching students to use AI responsibly and ethically while reinforcing the value of critical thinking, creativity, and human judgment, skills technology cannot replace.
The conversation also highlighted the importance of partnerships between education and industry. Employers were encouraged to stay engaged, communicate workforce needs, and provide internships, mentorships, and other real-world experiences that help students connect learning with future careers.
Ultimately, success meant more than earning a diploma or degree. Student completion, successful transfers, workforce placement, livable wages, and long-term career outcomes all play a role in preparing the next generation for success.
South Belt-Ellington Chamber President Lisa Holbrook attended as a guest of Clear Brook City MUD.

The Friends of Scouting Distinguished Citizens Breakfast on Wednesday, September 9th, was a powerful reminder of the lasting impact organizations like the Boy Scouts and, specifically, the Bay Area Council Boy Scouts of America, have on young people's lives. Congratulations to Golden Eagle Honoree Dr. Joseph Dervay, whose remarks highlighted how lessons learned through Scouting shaped both his character and career.
A special highlight came from Brian Freedman, Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership President, who spoke about our region's continued growth in key economic sectors and the importance of developing tomorrow's workforce. He noted that Scouting helps prepare young people for future careers by building the skills and experiences they gain while earning merit badges. Freedman also shared the inspiring story of Colonel Michael Fossum, whose involvement in Scouting helped steer him away from a very different path and ultimately toward a remarkable career as a NASA astronaut and military leader.

Dr. Dervay's personal story brought the room to life. He recalled being a young boy who was terrified of learning to swim. Yet one summer, through encouragement and perseverance, he conquered that fear. As he revealed to the audience, that young boy was him. Learning to swim became a gateway to new opportunities, greater confidence, and ultimately the life and career he would build. His story powerfully showed how Scouting helps young people overcome challenges and discover strengths they never knew they had.
Thank you to Luna's Mexican Restaurant for inviting South Belt-Ellington Chamber of Commerce President Lisa Holbrook to this event. It was a wonderful opportunity to be reminded of the importance of organizations that invest in young people, teach valuable life skills, build confidence, and help shape tomorrow's leaders.

On Saturday, September 12th, people gathered at Great Wolf Lodge in Webster for the Kidz Harbor Thorns to Triumph Experience. This event highlighted the importance of supporting abused and abandoned children across Texas, celebrating resilience and demonstrating how a caring community can truly impact the lives of kids in need.
Founded in 2003 by the late Rev. Jim H. Green, Kidz Harbor has dedicated itself to providing safety, stability, and hope for children facing difficult circumstances. For over two decades, the organization has helped kids heal, ensuring they receive the care and support they need.
One of the most poignant moments of the night was hearing personal accounts from people who have felt Kidz Harbor's impact firsthand. Their stories underscored the organization’s commitment to changing lives and highlighted how compassion, support, and a strong community can help young people navigate the toughest of times. In many ways, these narratives captured the event's essence, illustrating that with perseverance and care, adversity can transform into triumph.
As the night drew to a close, guests left with a clearer understanding of how their contributions make a difference for children facing adversity. Events like the Thorns to Triumph Experience are vital for Kidz Harbor, ensuring that those enduring tough times can find hope, healing, and a brighter future. With a compassionate community's support, even the most daunting challenges can lead to remarkable success.

The Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership’s Membership Meeting on Wednesday, September 16th, featured a candid discussion with five superintendents on current issues in public education.
Former Clear Creek ISD Superintendent Dr. Greg Smith moderated the session, guiding the conversation to cover both broad challenges and each leader's personal insights.
Each superintendent began by sharing their background, leadership influences, and core values. The discussion then highlighted the hidden gems in their districts: impactful programs, innovative teachers, and students whose achievements are vital to their communities and shape our future workforce.
Financial challenges were a central topic. Declining enrollment, inflation, and rising operational costs have strained every district. The superintendents discussed the difficulty of maintaining quality, supporting staff, and meeting student needs amid tightening budgets. Despite these pressures, they remain committed to protecting classrooms, preserving opportunities, and prioritizing students in every decision.
The superintendents also reflected on the rewards and challenges of their roles, including long hours, difficult decisions, and moments that reaffirm their dedication. One superintendent’s remark stood out: while the region is recognized for achievements in healthcare, aerospace, and energy, the true magic lies in watching a six-year-old learn to read.
This sentiment resonated with attendees, underscoring that public education is a daily effort to shape futures. Despite ongoing challenges, these leaders are dedicated to ensuring every child in Bay Area Houston has the opportunity to experience that magic.

The League City Regional Chamber of Commerce’s State of Higher Education Luncheon on Thursday, September 24th, highlighted education's critical role in driving economic growth and long-term vitality in our region.
Dr. Glenn Freedman moderated a panel with Dr. Helen Brewer, President of College of the Mainland; Dr. Richard Walker, President of the University of Houston–Clear Lake; and Dr. Alexander Okwonna, Deputy Chancellor and President of San Jacinto College. The panel discussed workforce needs for the next five to ten years, emphasizing that adaptability, problem-solving, communication, and technological proficiency will be essential in every industry. As many future jobs do not yet exist, institutions must be prepared to update curricula quickly to address emerging needs. Dr. Walker highlighted the need for flexibility at four-year universities to ensure students graduate with the skills employers require.
The panel also noted the rapid growth of certifications. Short-term, stackable credentials are becoming a key pathway for students seeking to enter the workforce quickly or upskill throughout their careers. Programs in healthcare, advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity, maritime operations, and logistics are expanding as employers seek specialized skills.
The panel also stressed the importance of direct engagement between businesses and students. Mock interviews, guest speakers, and paid internships were identified as effective ways for employers to prepare students for real-world expectations and build a future talent pipeline. Notably, one-quarter of all community college students in Texas study in our region, highlighting the significant impact of local institutions. San Jacinto College’s Deputy Superintendent summarized this with the phrase: “Come and Learn. Go and Earn.”
Thank you to Houston Methodist Clear Lake Hospital, and specifically Stephanie Clawson, for inviting Lisa Holbrook, President of the South Belt-Ellington Chamber of Commerce, to join their table.

Pampered Pink’s fashion show on Friday, September 25th, at the Lone Star Flight Museum highlighted a powerful message: every model was a breast cancer survivor or fighter. The event celebrated resilience and raised funds for local support.
Pampered Pink Bay Area is a Houston-based nonprofit dedicated to helping breast cancer survivors thrive. The organization supports local women through outreach, fundraising, awareness campaigns, and both emotional and financial assistance during treatment and recovery. The annual fashion show, produced by Lenny Matuszewski, is a key fundraising event that showcases the strength and confidence of women who have faced breast cancer.
The evening featured dinner, speakers, and both silent and live auctions. A highlight of the live auction was when two Houston firefighters energized the room, encouraging guests to bid on a special dinner for ten that they would prepare and serve. Their participation increased excitement and boosted bids, making the auction a memorable part of the night.
Special thanks to Houston Methodist Clear Lake Hospital for enabling Lisa Holbrook, President of the South Belt-Ellington Chamber of Commerce, to attend the event.
