DMHDDSUS Receives $1 Million SAMHSA Grant to Support Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic Efforts in NC

DMH/DD/SUS is excited to announce that it has received a $1 million 2025 Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) Planning Grant from SAMHSA. Similar to the area programs of the past, CCBHCs provide comprehensive mental health and substance use care for children and adults – regardless of a person’s ability to pay, their insurance status, or where they live. These community-based clinics also provide outpatient primary care screening and monitoring to support the health of the whole person.

Other key services include:

  • 24/7 Crisis Care
  • Veterans’ Community-Based Mental Health Care
  • Peer & Family Support Services
  • Case Management
  • Other Mental Health and Substance Use Treatment and Recovery Services

The planning grant will support the establishment of a North Carolina CCBHC certification process, the development of a prospective payment model, and the preparation for our 2026 SAMHSA CCBHC Demonstration Program application. All of these efforts will enable NC to access higher federal funding to deliver high-quality, comprehensive, and integrated mental health and substance use services.

Developing the North Carolina CCBHC certification and prospective payment model has been a long-standing goal of DMH/DD/SUS and is one of the key priority initiatives in our new Strategic Plan. CCBHCs will help more people have easier access to crisis and recovery services and medical care.

This planning grant moves us one step closer to ensuring that every North Carolinian has access to high-quality, comprehensive care when they need it most.

Today, DMH/DD/SUS supports 5 CCBHCs in North Carolina

  • Anuvia Prevention & Recovery Center (Charlotte)
  • B & D Integrated Health Services (Durham)
  • Coastal Horizons Center (Wilmington)
  • Mountain Area Health Education Center (Asheville)
  • SouthLight Healthcare (Raleigh)

Last year, these sites served 17,086 North Carolinians, helped over 1,300 people enroll in Medicaid, and provided services for 3,000 children and adolescents.
