3rd Annual Women’s Leadership Retreat
|
|
The PA Women, Diversity and Inclusion Committee is very excited to announce their 3rd annual “Sharing Ties – PA Women’s Leadership Retreat”!
WHEN – May 13,14,15, 2022
COST - $50.00 (Includes food and lodging for the entire weekend! We will have door prizes, silent auctions, fishing, and more!)
REGISTER BY April 28, 2022! (PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED – Space is limited, register today to secure your spot!)
ABOUT RETREAT –
The retreat focuses on women from local TU chapters/other organizations, interested in mentoring/helping other women or diverse audiences connect to the importance of healthy waters through conservation programs, and recreation opportunities (e.g. fly fishing, fishing etc). You do not need years of experience to be a mentor and help others learn to fly fish, tie flies, or how to help at a conservation project. We encourage women from all walks of life, and experiences to come and spend the weekend with us, networking, learning, and fishing!
The annual retreat provides an opportunity for female mentors from TU Chapter/other organizations, currently or interested in implementing women's programs to –
- Network and continue to build mentorship and program strategies
- Build and develop programs or project ideas
- Learn from others implementing similar programs
- Create a social support group to assist in implementing programs, projects, leadership opportunities within their own TU chapter/organization

Trout Unlimited “in” D.C. doing what they do best –
Defending our waters
|
|
Advocacy has looked very different since Choose Clean Water Coalition (Chesapeake Bay Watershed)
and the Coalition for the Delaware River Watershed’s last in-person hill day back in early March 2020
(prior to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic). Over the last two years these coalitions have mastered
the element of utilizing Zoom and other forms of socially distant technology to power full-steam-ahead
at their policy priorities and goals in the federal and state arenas.
This year the coalitions have met with over 50 federal legislators in all basin states including
Pennsylvania. Trout Unlimited’s Eastern Policy team had the chance to participate in these important
discusses with law makers to advocate for programs like the Chesapeake WILD program, the Delaware
River Basin Restoration Program, Wild and Scenic Rivers Program, and Land and Water Conservation
fund. To learn more about TU’s participation in these coalitions and federal work please contact a

PATU Conservation Committee Update
|
|
Here are a few of the things that the PATU Conservation committee is currently working on:
Neonicotoids. Neonicotinoids (sometimes shortened to neonics) are a class of neuro-active insecticides chemically similar to nicotine. To learn more, I recommend reading the article titled "Is Your Food Killing Your Fishing? " in the Winter 2022 edition of Trout magazine. Here is the link https://www.tu.org/magazine/conservation/stephenson-bugs/
I also saw an eye opening presentation from the from the TU Driftless Symposium (Wisconsin) on neonics. The link opens in Facebook. https://fb.watch/bqwYk6lQdw/
Contaminants of Emerging Concern. The committee is currently looking at Contaminants of Emerging Concern including "Forever Chemicals" like PFAS in relation to impacts on our coldwater resources.
Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are man-made chemicals, are resistant to heat, water and oil, and persist in the environment and the human body. PFAS are not found naturally in the environment. The PA DEP is taking public comment on new PFAS drinking water regulation.
Climate Change. If you haven't seen the latest "Climate Change & Trout: Impacts, Opinions and Ways You Can Help" video from TU Senior Scientist Helen Neville and the NLC Climate Change Workgroup

Diversity covers many avenues, from age, gender, social, and economic backgrounds, to ethnic, and family backgrounds, and much more. Just as diversity is important for healthy stream ecosystems, so too, is it’s importance, for organizations like TU, in order to sustain the hard work, and dedication of protecting, conserving, and enhancing the waters, and trout we love, and enjoy.
