Compass Rose Window, All Hallows by the Tower

The Compass Rose of Our Global Family

The Rev. Mother Nina Bacas

A couple of weeks ago, I took this photo of the compass rose window in London’s oldest church, All Hallows by the Tower. It’s a natural location for a compass, since All Hallows is a maritime church with deep ties to the Port of London and British history. Part of that legacy is the historical planting of the Church of England all around the world, including the American colonies. This compass rose is more than maritime; it is the symbol of the Anglican Communion—the third-largest Christian denomination in the world. This “global family” now includes 42 independent churches in 159 countries, each with its own version of the Book of Common Prayer. The ceremonial head of the Anglican Communion is the Archbishop of Canterbury, who also serves as the primate of all of England. As I’m sure you know, the current “ABC” is the first woman to serve in this role. I was able to meet her briefly!

I attended two days of meetings of the Compass Rose Society, a group devoted to supporting the global unity and mission of the Anglican Communion. It was an honor to hear bishops from around the world report on their current joys and challenges. As you can imagine, the divisions within the Anglican Communion are real. (Most are centered on human sexuality and gender equality.) But through it all, the message I heard lifted up is that clarity and charity are also real. We walk alongside each other not because we understand each other, but because we want to learn. Our unity is not in thinking together, but in acting together in shared mission. Let’s face it—we are all sinners standing at the foot of the cross. And for all of us, Jesus Christ is our hope.

Through peace, reconciliation, and shared mission, our “global family” has an opportunity to show the world something quite remarkable. Here at St. Bart’s, as a microcosm of the Anglican Communion, we, too, can continue to demonstrate how we share our lives together—not in full agreement or full understanding, but with the love of Christ unifying our way. It is what makes us remarkable and brings hope to all the lives we touch.

St. Bart’s 2027 Annual Giving Campaign

Our 2027 Giving Campaign is underway—this year’s theme is “One Church. One Boat. One River.” By now, you should have received your pledge packet, which includes a letter from Mother Nina and an information sheet outlining St. Bart’s milestone accomplishments in 2026 and how your pledge dollars support the church’s operations, mission, and values.

A big thank you to everyone who has submitted their pledge—we are off to a strong start toward reaching our 2027 Giving Campaign goal of $970,000!

If you haven’t already pledged, we invite you to watch these short videos by Guy Close and Allison Jones sharing why they give, and then prayerfully consider your own pledge. You can mail your pledge card in the provided envelope or drop it in the offertory basket, or pledge online. If you need assistance pledging or setting up regular online giving, contact our bookkeeper, Joelene Showers.

Join the Vestry

Consider Running for Vestry!

The vestry serves as the church’s board of directors and governs the business of the parish. Led by the rector and wardens, the vestry represents the congregation in every area of decision-making and welcomes ideas and feedback at any time.

Vestry membership includes 12 adult lay leaders, one youth representative, the rector, and parish officers. Members are elected to three-year terms at the parish annual meeting in January; the nonvoting youth representative serves for one year. Candidates must be confirmed, provide financial support to the parish with an annual pledge, and have been members of the parish for a minimum of six months.

To learn more, contact Mother Nina or Senior Warden Jerry Gray.

Tips for Using Realm

Realm is a great way to get to know our fellow parishioners—the online directory allows us to connect names to faces. If you have not yet had a chance to add your photo to your Realm profile, please take a few minutes and complete this meaningful task.

Depending on whether you’re using your browser or the Realm Connect app, the screen layouts may be slightly different, but the steps are essentially the same:

  1. On the Realm main screen, click on your initials, which will be in a small circle or square at the top right or left. This is where your photo will be displayed.
  2. Select “My Profile.”
  3. You will see your initials again in a circle. Click in the circle.
  4. Follow the prompts to add your photo. If you are on a mobile phone, you will be given the choice of taking a selfie if you don’t already have a photo on your device you’d like to use.

If you haven’t yet joined Realm and are having trouble accepting the invitation that was emailed to you, or have any other issues using Realm, please contact our bookkeeper, Joelene, or our office manager, Claudia.

St. Bart’s Film Club Discusses The Drama

Tuesday, November 10, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Mainstream Bar & Grill Dining Room (13385 Poway Rd.)

Join the new St. Bart’s Film Club’s monthly discussion on why we love movies, why they resonate, and how God speaks to us through them. So far, we have discussed The Odyssey and O Brother, Where Art Thou? Our next gathering will focus on The Drama, a dark comedy starring Robert Pattinson and Zendaya that explores themes of shame, judgment, and reconciliation. The film’s inquiry into our desire to control pain by turning others into villains is both affecting and timely. But it’s not all gloom. There’s hope in redemption—and humor, too. Watch or rewatch the film (available to stream on Paramount or Apple TV, or to rent on Prime or Apple for $6.99). Then join us for a lively, stimulating conversation. For more information, contact Nick Straub.
