April 2025 Spotlight:

Summer Services in Motion

As summer approaches and the seasons change, so do the services provided by the City of Gilroy. Gilroy Parks and Recreation Department increases its offerings with a variety of physical activities for the community, such as pickleball, tennis, basketball, cheerleading, volleyball, futsal, martial arts, soccer, dodgeball, and more. There are also enrichment classes like the arts, crochet, chess, and computer science. Many of these activities are offered in week-long segments. Those interested in adaptive activities will find classes with games, arts, crafts, and fitness that are also ongoing throughout the summer. There are one-day adaptive options like fishing and bowling as well. The activities are not just geared to our youth. In addition to the many year-round programs offered to seniors, such as nutrition, yoga and Tai Chi, there are summer 2025 dance classes such as Hula and Conchero.

Recreation in the summer would not be complete without swimming. There are a variety of swimming opportunities for all different ages, ranging from lap swim, open pool, and swim lessons located at The Gilroy CHS Aquatics Center. There are some teen jobs available, including training, for lifeguards and swim instructors. Additionally, we offer financial assistance for those who qualify and would like to participate in these swimming programs.

Summer is also the season for road repair and maintenance. Starting mid-June, $7,000,000 of road work will begin throughout our City. Typically, there are three levels of road repair and maintenance. The least expensive application is just a topcoat that is only considered as preventative maintenance. The most expensive is full road re-construction. The mid-level cost is when the top 1”-2” of asphalt is removed and replaced.

To hear more about these topics or to talk about other things on your mind, please come to Coffee-with-the-Mayor on May 3rd at 9:30 AM in Council Chambers. For those who can’t make it, a video of this meeting, and all future ones, will be posted to the  City of Gilroy YouTube channel soon thereafter. Hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Mayor Greg Bozzo
