A Message from our President
Betsy Ernst

Dear Members,
Last month marked the new beginning; a New Year like we have never known since we turned the century over to the 21st. I am full of positive hope that this year will bring better ways to live and amazing connections with the arts.
When I reflect on phrases that best suit my thoughts as president of the Northport Arts Association I think of “Forge Ahead,” with all of its meanings for moving into the future towards a better place.
We have many offerings coming on the calendar for 2021 and I want to share with you some of the behind the scene activities that our board has been working on.
|
|
· You will see a new web site in the early spring that will be user friendly for classes, shows, studios, online exhibits, and an online store for selling artwork year round.
· We hope to include creative writing, small theater presentations, music, dancing and many new classes that add to our repertoire.
· We are open to suggestions that you may wish to add such as teaching in your specialty, requesting more exhibits or perhaps joining in a fundraising activity.
I am excited to tell you of a new development within the Northport Arts Association.
For the last several months a small committee has been working on a feasibility study to create a pottery studio within the umbrella of the Northport Arts Association. Last week the Leelanau Township Community Foundation has agreed to lease to us the old Ziter Medical office space. This place will become the new home of the Clay Works Studio.
In order to move ahead with these projects the NAA Board is going to conduct a major fundraising campaign starting in April of 2021.
With all of this excitement I hope that everyone has made is safely through the Holidays and I wish you all the very best.
Artfully yours,
Betsy Ernst

Someone once said that real power was standing naked on a corner waiting for no one. No wallet, no business card, no resume, no apparel to let the world know what and who you are. Just you. Simply being; confident in your own skin.
Art is standing naked on a corner waiting for no one. It is the purest representation of a moment, an emotion, a thought held by the artist. Done well, it carries the absolute power of communication as another person observes it, absorbs it and ultimately, understands it.

It the Northport Arts Association, we, as artists and members are drawn to these acts of creative expression and it is our goal to foster their emergence and to celebrate their existence by gathering the finished pieces together for our world to see.
We have all been through a lot this year. Our lives have changed in so many ways and the world around us has changed as well. In our isolation we’ve had the time to really look around to notice what is missing. And with the unexpected gift of time, many of us realized that we would like to be more connected to our own creative selves by learning how to make things of purpose, value and beauty. We also realized how much we miss showing up to experience the art of others in all its forms.
Over this COVID19 year, our board of directors have been meeting in person at times when it was safe, but mostly in Zoom meetings to keep the fire burning for all of the NAA by continuing activities however we could with classes, shows, sales and planning for a new, bright future.
We have been discussing plans for new class offerings, more shows both online and in person when we get the go-ahead to gather, larger fundraising efforts that will allow us to put these plans into action.
In this letter, we will share the outcomes of our planning and we’ll ask for your feedback as artists/members as we define the NAA’s calendar of events for 2021 and beyond and share some activities we would like to plan.
Among our membership are painters, sculptors, potters, weavers, jewelry makers, photographers, writers, poets and more. We also have members with a wealth of business knowledge, teaching experience and other skill sets that can help a young association like ours grow and thrive.
Now more than ever we need your support so please keep with us as we forge ahead into 2021.

Upcoming Online Events
In 2020 the Northport Arts Association, like everyone else, had to discover new ways to operate. Our first challenge was, how can we have the July Plein Air Paint Out, our biggest event?
It was time to get moving, so we met with our original web designer and he donated time to help us with setting up gallery product pages. Our first online event was Plein Air, which was scary as we had to have artwork loaded quickly to go live, online, at a specific time. We did it!, and continued to “do it”… for the August Members Exhibit, September Photo Exhibit, October Anniversary Exhibit and the Holiday Arts Market. Watch this space for updates on 2021 events.

Current and First online exhibit for 2021...
February - Love is… Art
Love is….happening, online. Artists are invited to submit artwork of all media to be posted and for sale on the NAA website through the month of February. Love is more than hearts and flowers. It is your art and what your art means to you and others.
This online exhibit is unique in that we are featuring three ways to enjoy the arts.
First, you can view the work of each artist in the “Artist Gallery”, where each artist's collection of artwork is featured with a description about the love of their art.
Then we have the “Art Exhibit & Sale” where you can see all the artwork, click on what you love and purchase.
Lastly, and a new feature, is the “Audio Visual Presentations”. Here you can listen to an artist read a poem or short story or see and listen to musicians performing live or recorded. You have the option to love their art by making donations. We hope the audio visual presentation are enjoyed by guests and become a popular outlet for our performing artists.
