Just walking toward the pen containing the 17 puppies caused them to jump, yap, and wag their tails, showing their dire desire to experience life on the other side of the wire. They craved attention and love.
Pack life, alone in a pen, limits dogs’ ability to socialize, to be “loving companions,” and forces them to compete for food and water. In a few more months, the 17 puppies would join the initial adult dogs in the “breeding cycle!”
But a cascade of support was deployed because the woman called for help. WCHS, along with a couple of other organizations, responded, and together, all 22 dogs left the property bound for their new beginnings.
Our team brought the eight dog ladies back to the shelter yesterday. They are dirty, smelly, and full of hookworms. They are enjoying the sunshine, their new toys, and all the individual attention from our staff and volunteers.
We are grateful to the other shelters who stepped up to rescue the rest of these dogs, and to all the kind people involved in their rescue. We are also grateful to the woman who realized she was in over her head, and asked for help.
Saying “yes” to helping comes with a cost—a cost WCHS can only afford because of the support of our generous donors!
The average cost to shelter, feed, vaccinate, provide parasite treatments, spay/neuter, and other necessary services for a dog is over $1,000.
That is $8,000 to save these eight lovely ladies!
