In these first 22-years, A Safe Haven for Newborns has established a network of resources and partnerships with hospitals and fire/EMS stations in all 67 Florida counties. A partnership that, with each passing year, continues to grow and get stronger.
When Nick Silverio, founder of A Safe Haven for Newborns, began his mission to end infant abandonment, his vision was to save the newborn and help the expectant mother prior to the birth of her baby. He structured a network of resources that would help her feel safe, that her life and that of her unborn child mattered to someone.
He amassed a network of agencies across the state that would provide the services and resources she needed to make an informed decision and feel safe. A decision that would affect her unborn child and the rest of her life in a judgment-free setting, all the while respecting her anonymity. It would be her safe haven, a place she could turn to for help where she would not feel abandoned and would not be judged.
Twenty-two years later, 371 newborns were given a chance at life. Their birth mothers sought the safest place to leave their newborn — 284 were surrendered at a hospital and 79 were left at 24/7 staffed fire/EMS stations all in the arms of a trained healthcare professional. All participating hospitals and fire/EMS stations display the A Safe Haven for Newborns sign that is provided by the Foundation at no cost.
For A Safe Haven for Newborns, every life is precious. Everyone is helped.
