The Part of Leadership No One Put in the Job Description

No one warned you that leadership would feel this heavy.

Not the workload, the endless meetings, or even the decisions stacked back-to-back on your calendar. What caught you off guard was the weight; the quiet, accumulating burden that comes from carrying responsibility for people, outcomes, and uncertainty all at once.

Leadership didn’t get harder because you got worse at it; it got harder because it got heavier.

You’re leading in a world of even greater constant change, tighter margins, and relentless expectations. You’re expected to be confident and empathetic. Decisive and inclusive. Authentic and polished. Steady when others are anxious. Optimistic when the path forward isn’t clear.

And while there’s no shortage of advice about leadership skills, frameworks, and best practices, there’s less conversation about this invisible part of the job; the part that lives beneath the title and beyond the org chart.

The part no one put in the job description.

How to Lead When Things Feel Increasingly Out of Control

Eric Solomon and Anup Srivastava | Harvard Business Review

Leaders everywhere are confronting the reality that things increasingly feel out of control. Three distinct forces are colliding to create a pervasive sense of fear and uncertainty: daily policy volatility, the future in an AI-saturated world, and geopolitical fragmentation. Leaders default to fixing the urgent and delaying the important. Experiments stall because they feel unsafe. Imagination shrivels up. As a result, managers begin trading long-term potential for short-term gains and protection. There are five practical ways to address the fear while preserving imagination, morale, and momentum: 1) Build a policy intelligence system, not a rumor mill; 2) default to real options, not binary bets; 3) create an AI operating doctrine; 4) protect leadership vision time like a critical asset; and 5) strengthen geopolitical and supply-chain resilience, together.

Catch Up with TLG

TLG at the SHRM-Atl Chapter Meeting

We attended an energizing and insightful SHRM-Atlanta chapter meeting this past month. A special thank you to Sawnta Hooks, founder of Mindful Culture Creators for her presentation on Navigating Distrust to Inclusive Leadership.

We’re grateful to have had the opportunity to connect with fellow HR professionals, share ideas, and explore how to build trust, foster inclusion, and lead with confidence.

TLG at HR Live

We are so grateful to be a part of a community that values giving back. This past month at the HR Live holiday party, we collected toys to donate to Toys for Tots, a nonprofit organization that delivers toys to children.

We collected three boxes of toys to donate, and it is all thanks to the generosity of this community!

TLG Holiday Party

This month, we hosted TLG's annual holiday party. It was wonderful to connect with all our coaches and consultants to celebrate the season. It is not often that we get together in these ways, but it is always impactful.

Thank you to those who attended, and to those we missed, we hope to catch you in the new year!

Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action

Discover the book that is captivating millions on TikTok and that served as the basis for one of the most popular TED Talks of all time—with more than 56 million views and counting. Over a decade ago, Simon Sinek started a movement that inspired millions to demand purpose at work, to ask what was the WHY of their organization. Since then, millions have been touched by the power of his ideas, and these ideas remain as relevant and timely as ever.

START WITH WHY asks (and answers) the questions: why are some people and organizations more innovative, more influential, and more profitable than others? Why do some command greater loyalty from customers and employees alike? Even among the successful, why are so few able to repeat their success over and over?

Reinventing Organizations: A Guide to Creating Human Organizations inspired by the Next Stage in Human Consciousness

The way we manage organizations seems increasingly out of date. Survey after survey shows that a majority of employees feel disengaged from their companies. The epidemic of organizational disillusionment goes way beyond Corporate America-teachers, doctors, and nurses are leaving their professions in record numbers because the way we run schools and hospitals kills their vocation. Government agencies and nonprofits have a noble purpose, but working for these entities often feels soulless and lifeless just the same. All these organizations suffer from power games played at the top and powerlessness at lower levels, from infighting and bureaucracy, from endless meetings and a seemingly never-ending succession of change and cost-cutting programs.
