Hello Marc,

I hope you're having a wonderful June. This month, I'm excited to share the most impactful takeaway from my training sessions—something that's transformed how organizations communicate long after our workshops end. It's called the Nugget Collection System, and it's surprisingly simple yet remarkably powerful. I've included a complete implementation guide that you can start using immediately.

Best regards,
Marc

THE MONTHLY NUGGET

Practical persuasion insights from Elevator Speech Training

June 2025 EDITION

The Most Impactful Habit My Clients Adopt (And You Can Too)

After conducting thousands of training sessions, I've discovered something remarkable: the organizations that experience the most lasting transformation aren't necessarily those with the biggest budgets or the most experience. They're the ones that implement one simple habit after our training ends.

It's called the Nugget Collection System, and it enables everyone in an organization to talk about their work persuasively, engagingly, and with ease.

What Is a Nugget?

In my 4-step persuasion framework, Step 2 is all about building trust through concrete evidence—what I call "factual nuggets." These are specific details that make your claims feel real and credible:

The Problem Most Organizations Face

Most teams have amazing nuggets scattered throughout their work, but they don't systematically collect them. When someone asks, "What makes your organization special?" they default to abstract language: "We provide excellent service" or "We have significant impact."

Compare that to this nugget from one of my recent workshop participants: "Last month, when we delivered school supplies to Jefferson Elementary, Principal Martinez told me, 'This is the first time in 12 years every student will start with everything they need.'"

Which version makes you believe their work matters?

The Simple Solution: 5 Minutes Once a Month

The Nugget Collection System is an organizational habit where teams spend five minutes each month identifying and collecting concrete, specific details that illustrate their impact and importance.

Here's how it works:

Why This Creates Lasting Impact

When organizations implement this system, three things happen:

Everyone Becomes a Better Spokesperson With concrete examples at their fingertips, staff, board members, and volunteers can all speak convincingly about the organization's work.
Team Morale Improves Regularly celebrating these moments reinforces everything that's good about your work and helps everyone see their impact more clearly.
Trust Builds Instantly When you can show people glimpses of your work through concrete details, they believe you—and then you can tell them almost anything.

Why Nuggets Beat Story Banks

Many organizations try to maintain "story banks"—collections of complete narratives about their work. But stories are long and difficult to remember in the moment when you need them most.

Nuggets are different. They're small, concrete details you can keep in your back pocket and drop into any conversation. Instead of trying to remember a five-minute story about Maria the scholarship recipient, you remember the nugget: "Graduate Destiny Williams texted us: 'Remember when you said I was college material and I laughed?'"

That single quote illustrates transformation, gratitude, and impact—without requiring you to memorize an entire narrative.

Start with Your Top 3 Claims

The most effective approach is to first identify the top 3 key claims your organization makes. For example:

This focused approach ensures you're not just collecting random good moments, but building evidence for the specific advantages that set you apart.

Examples in Action

Here are some sample nuggets that illustrate how this system works:

From a Healthcare Nonprofit:
"When 89-year-old Mr. Johnson got his first smartphone through our tech literacy program, he FaceTimed his granddaughter in California for two hours straight. She told us, 'I haven't seen him smile like that since Grandma passed.'"

From an Environmental Organization:
"Our river cleanup volunteers removed 1,847 pounds of trash last Saturday. Local news anchor Maria Santos said it was 'the cleanest she's seen the riverbank in 15 years of reporting.'"

From an Education Foundation:
"This year's scholarship recipients earned $847,000 in college scholarships. Graduate Destiny Williams texted us: 'Remember when you said I was college material and I laughed? Thank you for seeing what I couldn't see.'"

Start Your First Nugget Hunt

You can begin implementing this system in your next team meeting. Simply ask: "What concrete moments from this month illustrate our impact and importance?"

For best results, add a permanent 5-minute "Nugget Hunt" item to your monthly team meeting agenda. Making it a standing agenda item ensures the habit sticks and becomes part of your organizational culture.

Listen for the specific details that make stories come alive, add them to a shared document, and watch as your entire organization becomes better at sharing what makes your work matter.

The secret benefit? This habit doesn't just improve how you talk about your work—it helps you see your own impact more clearly. When you start looking for nuggets, you discover magic happening in your organization that you might have otherwise overlooked.
